Yep outside of about 5-7 games Logan Mailloux has been very ordinary and I would rate Adam Engstrom ahead of him.

There will be some growing pains 🤣
There is no question, at least in this writer's opinion, that Engstrom has now passed Mailloux on Montreal's depth charts. Unless Mailloux can gain that need extra step/ acceleration, this kid will never be anything more than a fringe NHL defenceman. Now perhaps as a forward, that is something completely different.

He's brought it way down and has continued to do that this year in the AHL.
Maybe. But too often I've seen Dobes flopping around on the ice like a fish out of water. This guy does not instill confidence, at least in this writer's opinion. His call up has more to do with Primeau's poor level of play than Dobes' current abilities. Neither are answers to Montreal's goaltending depth issues.

I hope I'm wrong.

Dobes has a lot of athleticism and talent. I don't see him flopping around, I see him doing whatever it takes to get in front of a puck even if it's unorthodox at times.

I've had a lot of time for Dobes since we drafted him. There's a lot to coach in on technique but he's a top tier athlete in net and has the size, competitiveness to match.

Don't write him off. He might not ultimately win out over Fowler or Volokhin, but he's got a really great shot at taking the reins from Montembeault in the mean-time.

He can’t do worse than Primeau.

I don’t think so.

I think so.. athletically, Dobes is superior to Montembeault in every way. The questions for Dobes will be if he can refine his technique enough, if his fiery demeanor will result in his play going UP rather than DOWN, and if he can control his aggressiveness in his crease to not get exposed by that extra pass at the NHL level.

Does this mean Primeau has been shipped somewhere else ?
Not necessarily. They could keep him on the roster as a 3rd goalie - even if they hardly play him. But that really wouldn't make sense, imo. Better to either try to get something of value for him, or try to send him through waivers to Laval.

It seems Hughes got good value for Barron, even though Barron wasn't ready to get the job done with us at this time. Not expecting to get the same value with Primeau though.

How can you say that ? Dobes has not faced NHL shooters yet.

Dominic Hasek was pretty unorthodox if I remember correctly.

So you think he's really better than a goalie that was selected to play for Team Canada? That's being very optimistic. It may well be a bridge too far, or in Dobes's case, a net too far.

Can anyone who's been watching Laval shed light on why HuGo chose to call up Dobes over Hughes?
They wanna see what they got in Dobes before next season since the plan was probably to have him become the NHL backup next year (while Fowler become the AHL starter).

Hughes is just the vet backup in the AHL and Dobes is better.

Hughes is an adequate AHL level goalie who would be overwhelmed at the NHL level. It may well also happen to Dobes. Goaltending depth, at least as of today, is not a strength of this franchise. The hope of the future is Fowler.

I said athletically Dobes is superior to Montembeault in every way, which he is. Athleticism isn't the only thing that makes a goalie great, though, which is why I clearly outlined the things, including the mental pieces, that Dobes needs to do to realize his potential.

History is littered with athletically superior goalies who did not have great careers due to their mental game, reading of the play, etc. Ilya Samsonov should be one of the best goalies in the league, he isn't.

You can look at it another way.. no one is going to argue that Patrice Bergeron had elite athletic tools, yet he was an elite hockey player.

Dominic Hasek was pretty unorthodox if I remember correctly.

When I was younger, playing nets but not really understanding the position from a strategic perspective, I used to think Hasek was the luckiest ass goalie to ever play the game.

When I got older and started to learn more about the position, he was really ahead of his time, he was baiting people into those saves all the time. Everything he did had a purpose.. the barrel roll save was specifically designed to force shooters into a space where they couldn't get enough lift on the puck and had no choice but to shovel it along the ice to where his sprawling arm would be.

If we put Primeau on waivers and he clears, it will make it easier to trade him. If we trade for a vet goalie, the other team likely has to call someone up, and Primeau can be included to fill in for their AHL team.

They might have something in the hopper and Dobes gets a taste this weekend, before going back when Primeau is swapped for a veteran 3rd stringer.

This was my first thought. Dobes gets his nhl taste and a nice paycheque, but chances are he will be short term and then sent back to Laval while they execute a deal for a veteran backup with nhl experience.

It does when you have a solid ahl team and a rebuilding team in the nhl. We don’t have any superstars that are going to stand out or help the big team right now. These guys are better off winning in Laval this year. Instead of getting more experienced, they’re throwing another young guy into the mix. Why do you think they got Carrière instead of calling up Mailloux? They can’t keep adding kids and expect to win.
Mailloux has not shown proper development and it's the only reason why he hasn't been called up long ago.
I clearly said players who have developed like Dobes and who merit a call up.

The main purpose of the Laval Rocket is to develop and graduate our top prospects to the NHL period end of story.
Winning games in Laval is not going to be better for a player who is ready than learning how to win at the NHL level is.
At one point you have to find out if they are ready and the last two games of the season won't neccessarily do that.
