You can't have it both ways. Does he get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to be a professional hockey player? If so, he has to accept that if he plays like ****, the press will call him on it.

While there were plenty of poor performances, he was brought in as a ringer of sorts - a guy that was expected to dominate the WJC's, and his play was putrid. Not only was he wholly ineffective, he actually straight up helped his team lose.

If he gets called a "Goat" by the press, that's the way it goes.

Straight up helping his loss....wth...

No. I don't. If you ask people who was one player on Team Canada that you might call the goat in that game against Finland, most are going to say Virtanen. Now couple that with the fact he is a Vancouver Canucks and from Greater Vancouver, it's big news. Look how much we are discussing it.

No, its really not "big news". It's worthy of an article, it's not worthy of a full page blasting.

Yeesh.

Historically, the term "goat" means a person who is being unfairly singled out for the failures of a group (it is short for scapegoat.) Note the way it's written ... "Plenty of people are laying the blame at the feet of ... Jake Virtanen."

In other words, lots of people are singling out Jake as a scapegoat, which is true. Whether or not it's fair is not discussed. Has anyone read the article?

I think some of you are really hypersensitive about our rookies and are freaking out over nothing. For all you know, the article is about how people are unfairly singling out Jake for the failings of Team Canada.

No 19 year old kid should get that type of pressure or publicity.

I wouldn't br surprised if he asks for a trade at some point

Canada did not have a good tournament at all and it was really a team loss.

Players know that and probably won't point fingers at each other. The Oilers were supportive of Steve Smith even though he scored on his own team.

Newspapers know that sensationalism sells though.

Yes will no one really cares what's said on here, it's an anonymous internet forum where a lot of dumb things are said. That's a professional publication that's going to be seen by fans, friends, & family across the province.

Hypocrisy is v embarrassing.

Yup. I bet more people checked out that article and today's paper than they would have of otherwise.

Pick is still justified

Haydn fleury has done nothing so far. Dude was not impressive considering he's the highest 14 draftee defence men.

Ehlers vanished the last 20 games. 1 goal yesterday and leading his team in embellishments.
Nylander has done nothing since ahl numbers are useless. (Jason Krog)
Mdc didn't even make team canada. Yea no........ Everyone just wants to blame Virtanen. Those guys are just as good right now.

Ehlers is doing much better this year and blew him out of thr water in Junior.

The bolded is just ridiculous.

That's on Benning for picking Virtanen at 6 and putting him on the team when he clearly wasn't ready. Virtanen would receive similar criticism elsewhere. Aside from a few homers, this is what the Leafs fanbase was like with Gauthier.

Team loss and a massive coaching fail.

What about being wholly ineffective, taking one penalty to take your team off a power play at a pivotal point in an elimination game, then taking another penalty on the same shift to give the game away to your opponent.

It was more than just one penalty. It was a debacle.

Yeah, done nothing except for that goal tonight!

Be real. Ehlers is at 28-30 point pace in his first NHL season. Respectable results for a teenager. Virtanen is at half that pace and can't even get the job done against his own age group. Meanwhile, Nylander leads the AHL in points as a teenager.

keep spinning. We were right during the 2014 about Virtanen and we're still right in 2016.

Actually, neither Ehlers or Virtanen has done much in the NHL so far...

Jake may not have been the right pick (tbd), but Ehlers has certainly not shown enough in the NHL to prove that he would have been the right pick either.

Ehlers has 2 goals in his last 29 games. That goal yesterday was an empty net goal as well, so he's scored one goal on a goalie in 29 games.

Over their last 29 games, Ehlers has barely provided more offense than Dorsett. Ehlers has a couple more points, but the same number of 5v5 points as Dorsett during that span.

Even including his hot start in his first 9/10 games, Ehlers has fewer ES points per 60 minutes than Virtanen.

I just don't understand why Leaf fans feel so betrayed. Like it was their team or something and it's their job to rip Virtanen.

He didn't hold back Marner for doing nothing at ES or for most of the tourney.

For all the talk of Vsncouver fans being obsessed with Toronto, they sure can't ever get us out of their heads.

Just wanted to drop in and say you guys should be happy to have Virtanen, he is a good prospect who had a bad game.

The coaching was terrible and let the players emotions get the better of them.

It's clear that Virtanen is not ready for the NHL. He did not play with any fire in that tournament and you have to wonder if it maybe got into his head that he did not need to try as he was in the NHL and obviously better than everyone at the WJC's.

Maybe this failure will set him straight and make him realize that he needs to work harder to fix his game - and that he won't be able to just coast into an NHL job.

I really wish he got sent back, maybe he still will.

I hope you would feel the same way if it were your kid.

Oh stop with the pity party. He is a professional in an industry that is exposed to the public and he's being rightfully criticized.

If he was my son I would hate for him to be treated like this at any age but I would hope that by 19 I've taught him to expect criticism as a professional hockey player and to handle it accordingly.

The Province didn't write this headline for ***** and giggles, they are reflecting the general sentiment around Jake's WJC performance and they're trying to sell papers.
