The Kings signed him out of the OHL in 2010 after the Penguins didn't opt to sign him. He's been working on his game in the AHL for a couple of years now and with the injuries on the blue line he's been getting his chance.

He's a big kid, can lay out some big hits - but he still has work to do in the defensive zone with regards to gap control and keeping his feet moving. But the offense he provides seems to make up for it. He's got quite a good shot and has produced some nice assists too.

The way things are going I would not be surprised to see him continue to partner Drew Doughty for the rest of the season and get some nice PP time. Darryl Sutter doesn't seem to have too much confidence in the blue liners right now, outside Doughty/Voynov and now Muzzin.

That is unless/until the Kings make a trade for a D-man, Willie Mitchell returns or Muzzin loses his confidence (which reportedly is an issue for him). By then the situation might change.

I dont think Matt Greene returning will have an impact on Muzzin's situation.

I think he's a bit more competent than Corvo in regards to defense and turnovers. Corvo would make some really horrid decisions, such as that tape to tape pass to Kirk Maltby. He needs to be a bit more aware of when to (and not to) pinch, and he is prone to some lapses in his game here and there, as we saw last night where he had difficulty handling speed, but I kind of liken him more as a Kyle Quincey like defenseman.

Way, way too early for that assessment. The kid has played maybe 20 NHL games. There are very, very few defensemen who come up from the minors and do NOT suck in their own zone. Considering how green he is, he's been fine. If in a year he hasn't improved, there would be cause for some mild concern.

Joe Corvo is still an NHL defenseman to this day so you could do much worse than be compared to him.

As for the comparison, Muzzin has more size and is much more willing to throw the body while Corvo is much slicker with the puck and stickhandling, even with Muzzin's fake around the Calgary D and pass to Stoll the other night.

He is a rookie and has behaved like a rookie. Has had some great games, and some real bad ones.

Last night is a great example of a bad night for him.

I have been impressed by how Muzzin picked up the physical aspect of his game lately. He needs to be more consistent in doing that. He also needs to work on his agility in the off-season. When he is moving his feet in the d-zone and neutral zone he is fine, but when he doesn't he gets burned and has to take a penalty to prevent a Grade A chance.

He has improved more than I expected he would this season.

Muzzin by the way isn't simply on a "hot streak", he is playing the way allot of us knew he would around here.

What you are seeing with JM is what you get. He isn't ever going to be good enough to carry a D partner but if you put him with someone who can play he will always be good enough to take advantage of the chance.

He is a solid 4/6 dman in his rookie year. Ups and Downs but for the most part after 20 games you are seeing where he is at this point of his development. In 3 years the only true change is that experience will have shown him how to limit his mistakes.

That said he is 3rd in all rookie D scoring (4 points behind the top scoring rookie D who has played 4 more games) and leads all rookie D in +/- with +11 (4 more than his nearest comp).

He has averaged over 20mins a game over the past 10 games which is right near the top as well and also shows that DS has confidence in the kid. He is second on our team in D scoring and leads our team in +/- as well.

Looking at the statistics, the minutes he's playing now and the role he has paired with Drew Doughty on a depleted blue line on the Stanley Cup Champions. You think there's a case to be made for him as a Calder Candidate ? I wonder who the serious candidates are this year ... Yakupov hasn't really done enough to warrant it. The early front runner Tarasenko got roughed up. That leaves who ... Conacher and Huberdeau as front runners probably ... but who else ?

We'll have to wait a while and see how things develop, but right now it looks like he could be in the conversation at least.

confidence is clearly on his side. And the hunger to succeed.

He's another proven player that shows our farm league's approach on training a player and grooming a player to be NHL ready has been working.

It also shows proves that it doesn't matter which round you're drafted in, you'll have an equal opportunity to make the team, given through hardwork and patience.

He's got some more improvements to correct on defense but so far his offense game has improved dramatically.
