Always liked him, when he was down in the AHL he was far the best guy on the ice, when he came up to the big club looked like he lost confidence, maybe a guy you use kid gloves with instead of boxing gloves. Skating never an issue with him, decision making maybe, then again a confidence issue, look forward to see what Babs can do with him, we seen what he did with Dmen back with the wings.

I did't get to see the game, but did watch highlights and read some write ups. Seems Jake had a real good game last night. Let's hope he can keep it up and build off of this. I've said a million times that people don't just randomly forget to play hockey. At 25 years old it's far too early to write Gardiner off. Hopefully Babcock gets him back on the right path. Tonight indicates positive things.

Jake was the sort of relied on to be the experienced puck mover last night. Rose to the challenge. Babcock effect?

He's always been the best when he's felt he has the green light to be active, not just reacting. Saw it under Carlyle many times how he stopped skating, stopped playing to his strengths. So far this preseason, he's playing like he should and I think it shows. He was pretty much a guarantee for zone exits and zone entries both this last game.

It was actually nice to see him use his body. He had a hit or two which was nice to see. But mostly he really used his body well to rub guys off the puck, and to protect the puck once he had it. That was really nice to see.

Babcock is really talking lots to the kid when he comes off, I think it will pay off.

I was impressed by Gardiner's play last night...He didn't make many mistakes and his offensive instincts were really good...He also looked to be improved defensively too and didn't panic in his own zone with the puck. We've seen flashes of this before so let's hope that he can be more consistent game in and game out...

It's a good start to the season but let's be realistic here,it was only against Montreal's B squad. He needs to play well against the top competition when the intensity & pace is much higher.

Right now if he's developing good habits against a B squad, I'll take that progression any day.

Gards was great, last night..!

I stand by my original thoughts last season, when I looked closely at his eyes, in interviews.. and in games.. He and Reimer both seemed to have not been over their concussion symptoms.. (they both had two each, remember). These things can drag on a long time, if no one keeps a steady eye on it.

I think he's much clearer, so far... and his focus seems to be a lot better.. Hope it's the same with Reims..

Gardiner has shown plenty of flashes over the last few years. This isn't about one preseason game, this is about whether or not he is on the cusp of realizing his potential and taking the next step in his development. So far, he seems to be on the right track early in training camp.

I get it

after the Boston season he was a future Norris winner around here.

now after 1 preseason game its the same thing.

lets discuss after the season and see where he's at. for our sake and his I hope he finally starts to put it together.

Ten reg. season games, is a good window for assessing him...

good in what way? Jake has been up and down since he's been in the league.

That's the main knock on him so how is 10 games a good window into anything?

I think Gardiner is going to flourish under a coach who can directly communicate what he wants from his players, further one who can clearly identify problems and off solutions to their problems.

Carlyle's most repeated phrase from last season was "I don't know" - even seasoned vets like Polak comment d that the team was aimless, lacking proper direction.

Yup

Jake just needs to simplify his game and be told exactly what to do. He's the type of guy that will flourish in his early 30's, late 20's

Maybe like a Giordano :amazed:

A common trend with Gardiner is that he starts off the year utterly terrible (usually when the Gardiner hate-campaign is in full effect) and gets better as it goes on, usually has his best games at the tail end of the year.

Really hoping he can buck that trend this year and be good right out of the gate.
