Valuable player but not a core player.

If they lose him they can put the savings to other uses. Replace his role with multiple players. (Center production from Beck; PK duties to Kapanen).

Bottom 6 shell game.

Can’t overspend with Laine, Matheson, Dach and Hutson due soon.

Youppi and Evans 😅

It’s not a matter of wanting to keep him. Everyone does. It’s all about how much he wants. If it’s sub 4m then sign him. If it’s 4m+ we have to think about it. If it’s 5 mil, trade him.

Young players with his skill set are very rare and we have no one to replace him next year. When we got rid of Carbo, it took years to get a replacement. When we got rid of Danault, we got lucky that Evans was able to fill in quickly. Also there is no reason to dismantle our 4th line which is the most productive in the league.

No they aren’t.

This guy is not Guy Carbonneau. And even back then we had - Skrudland, McPhee, Keane….

I like him a lot. But he’s not a rare talent. He’s not irreplaceable.

We’ve got Beck, Kappenen, Heineman… We have tons of this kind of player.

The reason to keep Evans is that he’s a mature player and can help us win in the short term. Moreover he can be used to shelter others as they develop.

I like him. I want to keep him. But it has to be for reasonable money.

Since Heineman was lost to injury our 4th line has been way less efficient.

Evans and Armia still look good as a whole, but it's been tougher on them.

Which makes me think that Heineman, with his speed, shot, and relentless forecheck, might have been "the straw that stirs the drink" in this case.

Anyhow, I'm on team "re-sign Evans".

It's harder than most on here think to find such a good pro and defensive center as Evans.

Evans should remain in his prime for the next 4-5 years, is very good defensively and on the PK, has great work ethic, is reasonably productive offensively, wins faceoffs at a decent rate, is fast, generally good for puck-possession, wants to actually be here in Montreal, sticks up for his teammates, and is just generally a "glue guy" in the locker room. What's not to love about a player like that?

Oh, and we don't even have to spend assets to acquire him, just some capspace.

Seriously, even if we overpay a bit on Evans' contract it's not the end of the world. I'd rather we showed some respect to a guy that stuck with our team all through the down years after the playoff push, and who might help our team going forward, rather than trading him for scraps on the dollar at the deadline and letting him walk to UFA.

But but, Owen Beck would able to replace him right away right ? Right ?
Exactly. Beck could take over for Dvorak I think, but no way does he fill Evans' shoes this early in his career. Been saying this forever. Evans is a top quality bottom 6 player. Just like Lehkonen and Eller before him. He will only get universal praise when he leaves.

Evan's winning goal started because of Evans! Evans won his defensive-zone faceoff before! Evans efforts has been rewarded!

His 11th goal of the season! His last goal was against Tampa Bay Lightning on December 29th 2024... His first goal of 2025 is against Tampa Bay Lightning on January 21th 2025!

No thanks for 5 years

5x $3.5M yeah. But I suspect he is after $4M-$5M range.

I can't help but think that the hold up means the Habs have two choices. Let him play it out and see what the cost is July 1st or trade him and try to find a stop gap replacement. Maybe the contract is coming before the TDL but we just don't know.

I think the cap hit will come down by the end of the year, compared to what it was if he were signed last month. He may not hit 20 goals or 40 points in the end.

If he gives us contract fits and won't sign before TDL, lets trade for Nelson.
* 2 years older and a much better center. Easily pushes Dach to RW or 3C
* We can do Flames 1st, one of our 2nd's, and a 3rd (or Mesar type prospect)
* Conditions that Nelson extends with us (5x $7.5M.... takes him to age 35)
* Nelson would basically cost $4M more than Evans (+/-).

I doubt any other team can offer a pick better than 12-18 for Nelson. Maybe the Sens?

We can then decide to keep Evans for the rest of the season (replaces Dvorak) or we flip him for a late 1st or two 2nd's.

Evans, Dvorak and Mcdavid all the same age! (28)

I though that was interesting

B Nelson is only 2 years older :naughty:

Obviously he's going to chase the bag. This is his chance to cash in on his career. It's been building up to this point. He's not going to give a "team-friendly deal" -- he's never had a chance to make a not-friendly deal in the first place, it would be insane for him to leave money on the table.

Let him sign with the Kraken or the Islanders for 4.15m a season or whatever it ends up being. I wish him the best. He's always welcome back at 50% retained ;)

Would you trade for Nelson but with extension? Only 2 years older than Evans.

EDIT: Nevermind. He's 5 years older than Evans.
