I think it has to do with the 50 contract limit. Swapping 7ths is almost a nothing move, but you want to at least have the flexibility to offer contracts to all your draft picks.
I heard one of the national guys mention in this context that, yes, you can sometimes have too many picks in the same draft for the reason you just described. That's why you need to keep an eye on teams like OTT (9 picks in the first 3 rounds), NJD (3 1sts and a 3rd) and MON (still with 1st, 3 2nds and 3rd) that have a ton of early picks and not enough contract spots to sign all of the players they draft in the early rounds.

I think the point of the Pietro negotiations are that it’s clear both sides want to reach an agreement. I think it’s a foregone conclusion that they’ll get there, but maybe it’s not close yet.

Allen has been a neutral value asset at worst, and I’ve said many times he had developed into a positive value asset. A 3rd round pick is worthwhile.

Allen deserves a hell of a lot of credit for how he handled both last post-season and this one. He has proven himself to be a team-first guy, and demonstrated that he took his preparation very seriously to be able to come in and give the team solid starts in the Vancouver series when he’d played all of one game since March. It won’t surprise me in the least if he becomes the starter in Montreal over time. He’ll probably re-sign there for a small contract as the back-up guy. I sure hope Husso is ready, or another cheap vet can fill that spot. It’s been a luxury to have a player as good as Allen as the back-up.

This is also a loud statement of support for Binnington.

I didn't gather that from Army's comments yesterday. I got the impression the Blues let Petro know they really want him back, but that they're not sure if he wants to come back or test FA.

Wow on NJD and Ottawa BOTH having that many good picks!

Also sucks Army couldn’t pluck 1 of those 3 2nd rounders MTL has. I’m sure it wasn’t for lack of trying.

I kind of get the feeling this trade was going to happen no matter what. Like army said, with the unexpected flat cap for next few years, it’s important to have cap space with a team that had little to none before this trade.

I see OTT as a dark horse candidate for Dunn if we decide to move him. They could afford to extend him long term at a higher AAV than we can and could realistically do so because they need a lot of help getting to the floor, they don't really have anyone of note behind Chabot, Zaitsev and (possibly) Brannstrom that is NHL caliber on defense, and they have a ton of picks they could move.

I would love to see something along the lines of the NYI 1st or the OTT 2nd + Batherson for Dunn and Blais. Even if you only figure Dunn at $2M on a one year deal, you're shipping out $3.5M in cap for just over $1.5M for Batherson and Mikkola as the roster replacement for Dunn. That's another $2M in cap savings plus a late 1st/early 2nd. OTT could easily give Dunn $4M-$5M a year for 5-6 years to help them get to the floor and lock up a good young D.

This a weird trade for me to assess. Given Husso's extension in January, it seemed like the writing was on the wall. But, Binnington's play over the course of the full season wasn't very inspiring. I thought maybe, with how things played out towards seasons end, and how good Allen was might entice management to hold onto him. Obviously, you don't hold onto your backup goalie when your in dire need of cap space and he's expendable without taking money back. But, I do think the Blues may end up missing Allen more than people think. I found a nice article that summarizes a lot of my thoughts.

A Full Assessment of the St. Louis Blues Jake Allen Trade

Now, the Blues sit with slightly under $6.4M in cap space now. So obviously, another move is forthcoming.

As for my opinion on Allen. He clearly was never truly capable of carrying the full load of an undisputed #1 goalie. But, he was always a strong backup/platoon goalie. The Blues are putting all their chips on Binnington, because it remains to be seen how Husso handles an NHL net. So only time will tell if the bet pays off.

Just found the article? You have no affiliation with the site? 4 of your 12 posts on the board link articles by the same author. Last Word is historically terrible outside of prospect coverage. So I didn't check these articles as I don't want to give you the clicks. However, if you had been honest and said you're a new writer to the site, I would have given it a shot. Did you really think the "Oh I just happened to find this article..." click-bait would work forever? Hopefully more people saw through the charade.

They really aren’t putting all their chips on Binnington since he’s only under contract for one more year. If he’s not working out as a starter, the team will have to make a move, but it won’t be hard to make an adjustment there.

Won’t be hard to make an adjustment!!? After Binnington there is Husso. Do you think reliable starting goalies grow on trees? I think Binner will do well next season and they resign him to a long term deal.

Welcome back, Majorityof1. I hope you are well!

Thanks Simon. I'm as well as can be expected in these difficult times. I have been more in lurking mode lately. So I'm around, just being quiet.

As for the trade, to keep it on topic, I am in favor. Best wishes to Allen. I have said before he has it in him to be a good goalie, he just was never a great fit for us. Hopefully he can find success in Montreal. But we needed the cap space and the pick is just icing on the cake. So :thumbu:

Tervetuloa takaisin! Welcome back, Ranksu! Glad to see you posting, and seemingly well enough to post (or, at least, to click on the up finger to like a post. :naughty:).You are our scout in Finland - a valuable asset to this forum! Now that Allen has been traded, we will need to depend upon Husso to provide relief for Binnington to get needed rest. Is he ready for regular NHL play?

That may be the move of the offseason, we were 2-8 (including the Chicago exhibition game) without Ransku! Now we can get back to the Blues winning ways!

They’re not locked into an expensive long-term contract. Contrast it with situations around the league where teams are locked in to multi year expensive deals with faltering starters. That’s what I’m referring to.

Who are you and what have you done with the real Ranksu?

Jk glad to have you back buddy, and I agree with your comment

Nothing I guess. :help:

I just feel how everything folded out favors us and we got ROR, but damn almost everything crashed on Berglund's world and he has been all-time Blue. Shame.

Watch Husso implode next year forcing Army to re-sign Allen as as a UFA, to be the #1B for $2.2M/yr. The heads exploding (including my own) would be hilarious.
