With how hard it is to acquire a goalie at a decent price, and despite his early success, Allen is not ready to take over as #1, Halak won't be moved.

Halak didn't look good in the third but he has played pretty good this yr, Elliott has looked like crap the whole time. It doesn't matter, they would have to play like Roy in his prime to have a chance at a w with the way these jokers are playing. Turnover, turnover, turnover, all night long. Our transition and team d sucks, until its fixed were not doing anything.

All I'm saying is it's a function of the true (not the sound bites for the paper) feeling in the Blues' organization about Halak. If they don't believe he's the guy it's a terrible waste of money. And if they don't believe he's the guy how much worse could the consequences be of going with Elliott/Allen the rest of the season IF they don't believe in Halak's mental makeup, or health, or whatever.

Those are just big ifs that we have no idea how the people in charge feel about and we will never know until a move is made.

It would be like saying if management believes that Backes is not a good enough leader. It is an if that we will never know until a move is made.

Right but they called up a third goalie tonight and that can't have been pointed at Elliott, it's pointed at both of them not getting the job done. Which is actual evidence they don't like the job Halak is doing. Same with Elliott. But Halak might have more trade value and he costs way more, so while they're big ifs, there's enough smoke to speculate about the source of the fire. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, just exploring the possible different thought processes here. We all pretty much agree "something" needs to be done but there's a hell of a lot of disagreement about what that something is, because it's not completely obvious even to veteran, close observers of the team.

Turnovers and blown assignments led to about every goal except the obvious soft one.
I would argue that the 5th goal was soft as well. Yes, there was poor defensive rotation on the play, but Jackman was there to make sure that Carter couldn't walk in alone.

The angle was sharp, and Halak was way out of his crease challenging. If Halak hits his angle Carter has nothing to shoot at whatsoever, but he missed and let up a short-side goal (his third of the game). That shot needed to be stopped, and should have been stopped, but it wasn't.

I would think the consequences would/could be pretty bad. Halak may not be having the best season, BUT he will rebound. He's had something in his career that Elliott hasn't..consistency. He's been consistently decent to good his entire career. Unless we can trade Halak for an upgrade(which I highly doubt in today's market) he won't be traded.

True, he should have had it, but if Stewart was in position, Carter never would have had that opportunity. Stewart never should have gotten sucked in that much. Halak still should have made the save though.

They called up Allen because they need a spark, and probably have no faith in Elliott at all. With this season schedule, they will need two goalies who can give them a chance to win. Halak and Allen IMO is what they want. Send Elliott down to work on his game, maybe he comes in next yr motivated to get his job back.

Halak had one bad period tonight, Elliott has had one bad half season, I think we know who the odd man out will be. Either way our d needs some major improvement or our goalies will continue to get run out of the game.

Yea actually Jackman was going to cover for Stewart because Stewart was on the left side of center for some reason. Glad we get to see Allen back in net because Halak/Elliott haven't stole a game for us all season.

Clearly Halak is having a bad year also. Tonight Elliott was fine and Halak sucked. They didn't suddenly call up Allen with this thought: "Harrumph! Halak is letting us down, clearly it is time for Elliott to go!"

I don't want to fault Stewart too much, because that exact same rotation situation (over-rotation followed by a weak-side attack) happened at least 3 or 4 other times during the game in plays where he wasn't involved.

I can't say for sure that the plan was for the forward out high to rotate that far, but generally speaking the situation(s) in question seemed to be a byproduct of their defensive strategy this game (which featured aggressive rotation towards the puck).

No defense can prevent every shot, but they can work hard to limit the quality of shot taken. I think the general rule is that if a shot's taken from an angle from a reasonable distance and the goalie has a chance to square/challenge without a screen or deflection, then it's on the goalie if that shot happens to go in.

Halák won't be traded. He is the closest thing we have to a #1 and he'll get this years playoffs and next years playoffs to prove himself under pressure.

Unless Halák is injured again, then calling up Allen would suggest that signing Arnott isn't imminent.

I'm not buying that this was a decision based off tonight. The Blues let Elliott work at his game for awhile and put him in on Sunday to see if he would respond. He didn't. Allen was scheduled to play last night and did so they probably were waiting till after the game to announce he was coming up.

Either way I hope Allen comes in and plays like before, we need it in the worst way right now.

If it wasn't a decision based off tonight, it sure is unfortunate for Halak that it comes on the heels of a game that he knows he lost for the team. He wasn't the only person making errors but his were magnified. We can speculate about whether the decision had anything to do with tonight but all we can really know is that tonight happened and then Allen was called up.

Elliott wasn't fine. He looked lost on a few shots. Not good considering he barely played. If he played 60 minutes, it would have been ugly.

Going into last night, Halak was 5-1-1 with a 1.9 GAA and a save percentage of .901.

I'm struggling to see the bad season there. He had a stinker last night. I don't think this is based off last night.

And Elliott didn't look great last night either. It was lucky he only gave up one. Could have been 2 or 3.

Good move, bringing Allen up :handclap:

Little or no pressure on Allen, who should backup Halak. Elliott's job is on the line now and you don't keep 3 goalies on a NHL roster if all 3 are healthy. Elliott is either going to be traded or waived, good luck with a trade option, LOL. Something is cooking trade wise, just a feeling. And it won't be Halak. Halak had a terrible 3rd period last night but he didn't get any defensive help either.

Someone laughed at me in the GDT last night when I said we'd call up Allen. I hope that person feels really stupid now.

There's an open roster spot no one is getting traded, it's like someone said earlier in the thread. They're going to make everyone play for their jobs to light a fire under some *****

Stats don't tell everything. I'm seriously wondering how you guys can still defend Halak after these years? He IS NOT a #1 goalie, flat out. I've said it since he's been here and gotten a lot of flack from friends who just bring up his ONE playoff performence.

He's had the starting job for his 3rd year now and still has yet to show that he can be THAT go to guy. I'm done with excuses, he's not a number one goalie and never will be.

He hasn't been as good as we all hoped he would be since he got to STL, but he's a big step up from the Manny Legaces and Chris Masons we were working with before, and he's a huge step up from Elliot if you ask me. I don't view Halak as the problem though. Our transition game as been terrible since week 2 this season. It would take prime Hasek to make all the saves this team needs after bad turnovers in their own zones.
