You don’t tie up over $13m in goaltending if you’re a rebuilding team

In his scenario, Price is the one getting traded I believe.

I see it like him. Keep Allen as starter for a young team. Trade Price because he deserves to contend at his age and with his career. The haul for Price should be pretty good, even though fans of other teams will say it won't be.

Then trade also some vets like Toffoli, Gallagher (a little sad, but no more than losing Price) and some others.

Keep some decent vets to stabilize. On defense some vets are definitely needed. Savard, perhaps Edmundson and Kulak would be alright on a rebuilding team.

On offense, keep the young guys and maybe Josh Anderson, Dvorak, Armia, Lehkonen. Then look at what you have with Poehling, Pezzetta and some others. Bring up Belzile. Find a way to send Caufield to the AHL for additional development time.

This team will win some games, lose more. They will be hard working and it will be entertaining to see them sink or swim.

Why not? If they end up moving some of Chariot, Petry, Toffoli, HOffman, etc. it won't make a bloody difference.
Allen is 31 and on a good contract. You move him and get a piece for the rebuild rather than letting him walk for nothing after next season

You move him next season not this season when you don't have Price playing and you would have to throw Primeau to the wolves.

Or you pick up a cheap guy via trade or waivers (Buffalo just got Subban for future considerations). Hanging on to Allen makes zero sense. Get a decent return for him now. Oh no. The rebuilding team will lose more and get a higher pick. The horror

Btw. Are you just assuming Price never returns in this scenario?

It makes zero sense to pretty much just you. And as for Price there is still no word on when he could be back...could be weeks or could be months.

What’s the logic in keeping him? Protecting a goalie prospect? That’s ridiculous. Embrace the rebuild. Accept you’re going to lose a lot of games. Cash in on the assets the will help with the rebuild that won’t be around when you’re back on the upswing anyway.

If Montreal rebuilds or decides to retool, Allen to Edmonton for futures might make some sense. Basically rentals for futures for the Oilers.

Not sure what else would be needed as a balancer, but I wonder if a Samorukov + Koskinen (or if unlucky, then injured Smith) for Allen around the TDL might work as a base for both teams (if Montreal throws in the towel this season).

Allen gets moved next season, this should be pretty obvious
