Prospect Info: Jacob Fowler

He was a slightly above average goaltender playing on a very good team. Monty would have won Cups wit that team. He was better than Chris Nogood though

Osgood is a strange case. He had some stinker playoffs in his career, but he was good in the playoffs towards the end of his career.

Laval's coach is nominated for coach of the year and he bench his hottest goaltender? Why is that guy even nominated, what did he do beside nothing. Everyone knew Laval was going to be a top team in the AHL because they're stacked this year. Houle would have the same result, maybe better.

If Montembeault didn't get hurt Primeau would've likely been the starter going into the playoffs given he was a huge part of Laval finishing the season in first. Primeau ended the year 21-2-2 with a 1.96 GAA and .927 save % and in his last 12 games he was 9-0-2 with a .954 save % which is insane.

I am hoping we see Fowler next game given he's part of the future, but with how well Primeau played for Laval I am sure most coaches would've at least given him a shot at some point once he returned.

Yes, after Fowler loses a game. Doing it after he just shut the other team out, it made no sense. It gave Cleveland a fresh look at someone different vs going against the same goalie they'd been struggling to solve the last two games.

It had no logic to it other than Primeau was the starter incumbent going into the playoffs.. but you just don't mess with a winning goalie off a shutout, it angers hockey gods and Laval incurred that wrath.

Yep. Goalies get the net until they put up below a .900 or play a b2b.

Fowler doing his best Carey Price impersonation so far. 1.00 GAA 0.953 save% in 3 playoff games. He's had it easy though. Team is playing very well around him. Only 63 shots against in 3 games. Still, when it was Primeau in net in game 3, they looked less stellar.

Jacob Fowler might be the luckiest goalie I've seen in a while. Let me just preface this by saying I really like Fowler, think he's a winner and elite in his own way. He's probably the future and I can see him helping the habs to multiple NHL finals appearances during their competitive run.

But coming into Laval when they're the best AHL team. Then in probably 2 years once Monty's contract expires and leaves, he'll probably be the habs starter or at least split the first year with Dobes when Habs presumably finish their rebuild and are ready to be cup contenders.

In video game terms, his LUCK stat is maxed out to 100

Yep but he still has to deliver and he has so far. His ability to absorb pucks is impressive.
This next series will be a significant test.
Laval beat Rochester about a month ago and the shots were incredibly one sided for Rochester who had over 40 shots while Laval didn't muster 20. Primeau stole that game, a game Laval had no business winning.
The winner of this series could make it to the finals.
Laval has 2 excellent goalies to rely on.

I know I say it all the time but thank you again Billy Ryan.
I’m no goaltending expert but I do find that fire is a big separator for a lot of players and is often ignored for goalies. It’s what made Roy and Hasek so special. Belfour and Hextall too.

Hellebuyck keeps saying no one studies the game more than him. Yeah, and it shows. You’re so caught up in technique and player habits that you become like a computer rather than naturally just playing the position and being desperate to save the puck from going in the net. That’s why you’re shit in the playoffs, where drive is what makes champions.

Life is all about timing. Brodeur started playing for the Devils precisely when Lemaire started building one of the best defensive teams in the history of hockey after being crap for a whole decade. Facing under 20 shots a game was regular thing for Brodeur in those years. Some get lucky some don't!

The whole unfairly thing when it comes to high draft pick is so funny and stupid. All teams do that no exception and it makes 200% sense to do it. If you gonna spend a top 5 overall pick (a very valuable asset) on a young player you'll want to give that player a lot of experience early on so when he reaches his prime he'll already be an experienced player.

Jake Oettinger development path. AHL ATO right after sophomore year at BU. Then a full season in the AHL as the starter for the Texas Stars. Then Ben Bishop's backup in Dallas for a year, and then Dallas's starter the following year.

AHL is a development league, we shouldn't be playing Primeau unless they think he has a chance at the NHL.
Hughes should have given the coaching staff there a memo to develop Fowler as our future. The core's prime is coming and we cannot waste it with our current goaltending.
yea but hockey is less black and white than that. As a coach you have to build trust in your team. Giving opportunities based on merit to the player carrying the team all year is one way to do that. The coach did the right thing by giving an opportunity for Primeau to take the net back - he didn’t seize his chance so it’s fair play to give it back to fowler.
