Prospect Info: Jacob Fowler

Halak went to the Worlds and Danis was a backup.

Both Primeau and Dobes will be there as the "starter" with Hughes as "backup".

Fowler will need to steal the net, they won't force him in.
Halak first was called up to Mtl to be Huet’s backup to make place for Price in Hamilton - Halak went to WC after Habs failed to qualify for playoffs the last weekend of the 06-07 season

Perhaps but if he goes to Laval, it’s not just to “observe.” He will play. HuGo inherited Primeau and Hughes is just a guy. Fowler is their boy.

Whatever the Habs need to do to get him to burn an elc year they will promise and have a plan for it, before Fowler signs. He's going to play in Laval most likely for the next 2 seasons, which would conclude his ELC deal. So, his next deal would likely be a 2 year bridge type one to serve as a backup. Now, FLA did burn Knight's year 1 and ended up signing him for $4.5 mill AAV for 3 years afterwards, but he basically played very little in the A. I don't think Fowler will be mirroring that development.
Knight also needed the player assistance program which cost him a full year and more of development. I have no problem with burning a year of ELC, I just want him to be in the AHL for the playoffs

What is the consensus about the impact of playing a game or not after signing?

If he signs but doesn't play, he doesn't burn a year, is that it? He needs to play a game?

In my opinion what they should do is send him to Laval. Give him 2 games. After that if he played well give him a 3rd and then a 4th and from there they would know how ready he is. And they can decide to either keep him in Laval or give him the backup spot in Montreal for the playoff if they make it

I can safely say Fowler is no Dryden
I never said he was. But I have no more confidence in Dobes than Fowler presently. And college goalies have done it before. Even better, Tom Barrasso won the Vezina at age 19, Roy a Cup at the same age.

Knight got his deal with such a high AAV because he was an NHLer. FLA signed him early after his first full pro season where he got 32 NHL games.
I don't see Fowler in the NHL in 25/26. Always better to slow play the goalie position and let him get in plenty of games first. If he happens to excel in 25/26, then maybe he can be the backup in 26/27 in his final elc year.

He and the chubby guy who needs contact lenses will likely be co-starters in no more than two years, max.

Fowler can’t play in the NHL and AHL this year. It’s either or.

Can he play for Laval in playoffs? Thought he had to be on roster at trade deadline.

That only applies to pro-players & not amateurs on team's reserve list. Fowler will need to sign an AHL contract though. If he signs an NHL contract for this year, he is ineligible for the AHL play-offs.

So if he plays for Montreal, he can't play for Laval this year. It's next season. If he plays for Laval, he can't play for Montreal this season. It's one or the other.

I know but it was a different era, I think the only modern goaltender to start in the NHL under 20 yrs old is Fleury, Fowler is 20 yrs old and personally I don't feel more confident in Fowler winning us 2 pts than Dobes but again it's different opinions
