Isn’t that his role now? Don’t you want someone better than Bryson playing?
His role now is basically our #6 Dman. I think Ruff has fallen in love with him.

Do I want a better #6? Absolutely.
Do I want a better #7? I mean.....most NHL teams don't have #7s that can reliably/steadily play regular roles, which is why they're #7s.

Look at the team they're playing tonight. Utah was using the husk of Bortuzzo as their #7 and currently it's Nick DiSimone (who?)

Detroit is using Albert Johansson.
Ottawa has Gilbert

Only legit contenders really have decent enough #7 guys.

After all this time, with all of the problems that this team regularly runs into, they need different voices around the team. I don’t care if all of the prayer books and the watchtower subscription are in Bryson‘s name. I don’t care if the Music service subscriptions are all in his name. I don’t care if he’s the only one who knows the password to the Wi-Fi in their lounge. There’s no reason to bring this person back. Not one.

Hey, put some respect on DiSimone’s name!!! He has over half the points of Bryson in a quarter of the games!

Well, we don’t want to start doing things that good teams do. Look I’m not upset over Bryson, but seems like an easy player (we have had no success with) to switch out for a different part

Yep. I actually don’t mind Bryson. But half this team should be gone. Anything necessary for a new team culture.

You are missing the context here:

This signifies that they are 100% running it back after the single most disastrous season yet. Not a single thing will be changed, not a single upgrade will be made. They won't even churn over a literal replacement level player in an attempt to improve. There is absolutely no hope whatsoever.

Is it POSSIBLE that they run it back as is? Sure it is.

I personally don't think that signing an organizational 7/8/9 indicates anything other than that they like him. I don't think it's at all an indication for what's to come.

Maybe I'm wrong. And (as always), I'll own it if I am.

Bryson is what he is. Fine as a spare depth D-man.

But I'd rather they let him go and use the roster spot to take a chance on someone who could be better. Someone who could provide actual competition.

Assuming they re-sign Byram and make no other moves (which may not be a fair assumption, but it's better than guessing at what they COULD be doing, pairing can be mixed/matched as desired):

Byram-Dahlin
Power-JBD
Samuelsson-Clifton
Johnson, Bryson

Johnson won't be waivers-exempt, so I have him penciled in as the #7. So why sign Bryson to be the #8? Why not let him go and take a chance on someone who might have a higher ceiling for that #8 D-man spot?

I just don't see the upside. Guys like Bryson are a dime a dozen, if you strike out on finding someone better you can add them anytime...or you can go 14/7 instead of 13/8 and if you need to call someone up from Rochester, like Novikov/Komarov/AHL vet

The Sabres season isn't going to depend on who the #8 D-man is. This move isn't going to doom the Sabres by any means...but it could represent a potential missed opportunity to try and improve the team unless they are willing to waive Bryson to Rochester to make room for someone better.
