Player Discussion Jackson LaCombe

One of the few things bringing me joy lately

It's been since Fowler's prime that we had a defenseman where, as soon as it went to his stick, I was sure the puck was getting out of the zone with control. And even then, I was never as sure with Fowler as I was with LaCombe the last few months. Or at least, I wasn't sure that we were going to break the puck out and transition to a good possession.

LaCombe for Norris (next year).

Hopefully they don’t keep pairing him with an anchor the first few years of his career like what happened to Fowler. Will eventually wear on him and could ruin him

Needs to be with Helleson or Moore next year. Not some plug that can't skate. I'm not even that high on Helleson (3rd pairing guy) but he's an upgrade over Gudas or Trouba.
He’ll be with Gudas again next season. It is what it is. We’re going to be ass next year with Cronin coaching and Gudas/Trouba patrolling in the top 4.

The year after next we have a legit chance at being something interesting/fun.

It sucks

I really feel like there's a better than 50/50 chance Gudas is dealt in the offseason. To some extent he and Trouba are redundant, but Trouba has more gas left in the tank.

I'd rather keep Gudas over Trouba. Trouba doesn't look like he wants to stay long term. It all depends on his wife's career.

We might not have either after next season so thats going to be a big opportunity for guys like Luneau, Moore, and Warren.

I don’t see that happening at all for several reasons:

1) he’s our captain
2) he can be traded at the TDL a lot easier as he’s on an expiring deal
3) the org obviously likes his presence around the young guys

I really don’t mind having him around until February/March. Again, the issue is Cronin and his insistence on always having an aging vet on the top line/top pairing.

I’ll believe he’s going to be playing with LaCombe as our top pair RHD until something changes personally

I want Trouba and Gudas to stay personally. Gudas is obviously playing hurt. I think we can expect closer to his first year next year.
Trouba is fine as a second pairing guy short term.

Both guys could fetch a good amount at the deadline for teams looking for that "veteran" presence.

Dunno how much that really matters. I'm not sure having the C helped his game much either.

His AAV is pretty low by rising cap standards. I don't think it's a hindrance.

3) the org obviously likes his presence around the young guys

Well in that regard, I'm in agreement with the org. You can't just have a bunch of kids with no vets.

Yes, but maybe our best hope is for another young kid besides Lacombe to make a big step up. Lacombe earned trust and lots of icetime ... now we need Minty or someone else to do the same.

It's more about what probably will happen rather than what should happen.

Playoff tested, RHD, on very reasonable contracts will always be in demand at the deadline. Hell, look at what Dumo brought at the deadline. As for Jackson, he had a great year, but I would wait on an extension. Goals are very variance heavy, especially for defensemen, but what he's shown this season was great. If he continues to show these impressive metrics next season, obviously sign him for 8 years.

I don’t disagree that him or Trouba either needs to be moved to open up ice for younger/better players or be pushed down the lineup and not played on the top pairing. I just don’t think the org will actually do it until February. Thus, I think our defense has extremely low upside/potential until the end of next season/the season after.

I hope I’m wrong

The bigger issue is that we don't really have any better alternatives at RHD. Some people in this thread have been saying Helleson would be better in that spot and there really isn't any evidence that would support that. Helleson had easier matchups and zone starts and his on-ice defensive metrics were still worse than Gudas' and Trouba's. We need someone better than all 3 of them because none of them are all that good.

That’s true. The issue is that a right side of Gudas/Trouba/Helleson will not result in a competitive playoff team under any circumstance in my opinion.

So just be prepared to punt on next season if that’s what we lineup with in October
