Don't need the fights, but you need the physicality.

I'm not a big fan of Bieksa but I agree with him 100% on this one.
This is what's been missing from the league for much of the past 10-15 years. The physicality has been neutered so much that the emotions have also been muted as a result.

Also what was that ceremony honoring Salming and retiring his number? Is there a video of that whole ceremony? Brought a tear to my eye watching that clip. :(

Like it or not, humans crave violence. Since ancient times, we've had people compete and put their health on the line for our enjoyment.

When there are big hits, brawls, passion and scrums, every person in the stands are on their feet. Social media is lit up. Then a few days later we have nerds saying physicality doesn't matter in the game today. You take that out, you lose something special that people are drawn to

It's an ugly reality.

Physicality raises the stakes. When the stakes are higher, the excitement level is higher. Nothing ventured, nothing gained sort of thing.

It's why the NFL is an enormous enterprise despite massive problems all over the place. Nobody is watching "professional flag football league". idk if that even exists. But nobody would watch either way.

I mean, i don't mind Bieksa. But as a whole...it's just truly soul destroying, how little is left of what HNIC used to represent. It used to be special. Now it's...well it kinda sucks.

It's been bad for a long time. Don Cherry was past his best before date by many years but at least he was entertaining. You always wondered what he was going to say and if he behaved himself, it was just funny watching him try and talk and Ron try to wrangle him

I believe there was a ceremony last night in Sweden, there was one in Toronto before. I imagine you can find it all on youtube.

Not sure if emotions have been muted across the league, or it it's just the Leafs. /endcynicism

Trouba leaves his feet. Cheater!
What anyone who has thrown an open ice hit knows is that just before the moment of impact you MUST deload the weight off your skates (slightly jump) or you risk your legs tangling with your opponent while all your weight is anchored. This is how blown knees occur.
