Team is playing excellent so no players are being thrown under the bus. So let’s gripe about pbp guy. Quit yer whining or we will we’ll end up with a Singh or a Leah Hextall

Exhibit 972934: Jack rambling about somebody being the only right-handed shot on the Red Wings while Connor is about to have a breakaway. Horrendous goal call.

This kind of thing happens far too often. Its totally brutal.
He had an opporunity to build the call right from center ice and instead he thinks that talking about right handed shots is more important. He then calls McDavids brilliant play at the last second.
He does this over and over again...I dont know if he is just too stupid to realize how he is negatively impacting the game or he just doesnt care.
I suspect its the latter..

I have eyes and don't really need every moment spelled out for me on a live television broadcast. My mind isn't even focused on the words as it's happening in real time.
The thing is...the point of a play by play man is to add excitement to the game. To enhance the viewing experience.
Otherwise we could all just watch it with the sound off.

All pbp people do what jack does. And yes, I’m glad Singh especially is not calling oil games anymore. I’ll take him and his stories once in a while any day.

Jack has his warts like yapping about something that has no relation to the game, but I'd still take him 10/10 over any other PBP. Unless some fans want the return of Singh (barf). Even having to hear John Shorthouse makes my ears want to bleed.
I have listened to a few NHL network broadcasters and they are light years better than Jack.

Jack's my favorite. Its calls like these on why Jack's my favorite. Just don't see the same enthusiasm or passion for the Oilers from other broadcasters.

Jack has his moments for sure.
I just dont give a shit about his endless story telling.
Takes away from the game.

Jack was definitely an acquired taste for me. Didn't like him at all on the radio after to took over from Rod, but have really liked his calls and enthusiasm when he's on TV. The side stories don't bother me, I can see what's going on on the ice, if he happens to go on to long with a story, I'm not missing anything. More than makes up for it with his enthusiasm in big games. To each his own, but Jack is 10000% better than Singh in my books. Best we've had locally in quite some time.

I think that the difference for me is (seeing that you mentioned Rod Phillips) that Rod was totally invested in the game and his game calling reflected that. I dont ever recall Rod missing important plays because he was busy telling stories. I posted earlier in this thread about Jack and Louie being so invested in story telling that they both missed a critical play which acutally changed the outcome of the game. That IMO is inexcusable because Jacks priority SHOULD be the game and not stories.
Rods call enhanced the game and elevated it to another level.
You cant accomplish that by telling stories for half the game. Jack is a part timer IMO and when he does call a play its good but its an after thought far too often.
Jack really needs to get his priorities straight and understand his purpose on these broadcasts.
That means prioritizing the play and not prioritizing his stories.

Jack in a nutshell

Odd trivia tidbits as McD dekes out 4 guys

McDavid blowing by 4 opposing players from centre ice...pfffft...just call the last 2 seconds of that mundane play.
Better to finish the thought on Glendening because after all thats what Oilers fans REALLY care about.
The Glendening story is what really adds to the game.

I like Jack a lot, but yeah he needs to focus on calling the game.

Maybe his weird rants are a coping mechanism to deal with the awkward "Well that was an obvious penalty on an Oiler, but Mr Bettman says if I like my job I'm not supposed to talk about that. So here is a random story that has no relevance at all".

Sometimes I prefer to watch the opposition broadcast to see how they talk about the penalties. Some times they are equally dumbfounded when something wasn't called all game, but all of a sudden it's a penalty because the Oilers took the lead.

I know Jack is American so I wonder if he was raised on baseball radio/tv telecasts where they need 900 stories/game to fill all the downtime? Just so unnecessary in a much, much, much faster paced sport like hockey.

That is an excellent point...something I hadnt considered.
If that is in fact the case though then its not likely to change.

I'll give you a reverse example

Tell me the
"What can you even say??!!!" call when McD went through all 5 isn't an iconic call.
It will live among the best

Jack is better than a lot of play by play. He is funny too and recently has been PILING it on Debrusk in a friendly but also a "dude I am the star here and you got like 23 goals you scrub lol" every game or so and I LOVE IT.

And on the flip side, Cam Moon is a revelation on the radio call. Bob was trying to talk baseball with him during the game against St. Louis, and Cam politely but firmly shot him down by saying, "I'm in hockey mode right now" and refusing to get suckered in to the side chatter.

If only we could get Cam with an actual former player like Strudwick instead.

See...that is awesome. :thumbu:
I love it!

I really like his call too. Moon and Struds would be great.
If I could somehow line up the CHED audio feed with the video feed I would be very happy.
