Why would utah do this? Young Restricted free agent with good upside and even if he stays what he is a really useful bottom 9 guy. Unless a team got stupid they should just keep him.

I don't know because I don't have a specific team in mind But I do know GMs like size and youth and he's got both
And for the same reason Utahs GM would like McBain, right?
Utah traded the 47th Overall in 2022 for him, so I think they would at least want a 1st rounder, but then again are draft picks even that enticing for Utah? They still have a lot of them and which teams first rounders would even be available for McBain...probably from Playoff Teams, so mid to late first rounders where there is no guarantee of getting an NHL player or there is at least an additional waiting period until these picks can contribute in the NHL.
So I kinda doubt McBain will be available for draft picks, so we would be looking at a player for player trade and as Utah has a lot of small skilled forwards, it would be for another bigger more physical forward at which point the whole move would be kinda moot for Utah...don't really see a realistic trade.
Personally I'd think that Crouse would be more available then McBain
Crouse being more available then McBain (and that's just my opinion) doesn't mean he actually will be available or available for cheap
The overpayment would have to be a #1C or Top pairing D. It really doesn't make any sense.

McBain would be my favourite target for the Leafs, to bolster their C depth, though I appreciate he's been playing more wing this year. He's a really solid bottom six player, love how he plays. I also appreciate that it's highly unlikely they move him...

So really it comes down to "they should trade him because I want him" right? Because there's zero reason for Utah to do this. They aren't the Florida Marlins. Theyr'e an up and coming team and this is a good cost controlled kid that plays a role, recycling him into another pick or player doesn't make much sense.
So a later pick than what utah traded for McBain in the first place? How could they say no

McBain is a unicorn type player, if he continues to progress he'll be one of the top assets in the league in value. I don't think Utah wants draft picks either. They already have made, and continue to have, draft picks and prospects out of the wazoo. The only thing I could see McBain or Crouse being traded for is a young #1 or #2 steady minute munching d-dman. There were some deals last summer with Owen Power for Crouse being entertained by both fanbases. I don't think Buffalo would have any interest in that, but I think that would have to be the basis of a deal to see them traded. Note that I said basis, not talking about 1 for 1. I could see Andersson in CGY being a target, and before the Sergachev acquisition I could have seen Dobson, but I think Andersson and possibly McAvoy are really the only realistic targets right now.
I also think with Lamoreaux and Kesselring that it's much more likely that Utah just holds their hand.

Crouse is maybe available because McBain is emerging as a better option in that role. Crouse wont return a 1st IMO but could be a hockey trade for someone like Norris (as has been discussed in another thread).

If Utah was truly "selling" then I think both Lawson Crouse and Jack McBain could easily return a 1st round pick.
But, that's kind of pointless to what they're trying to accomplish -- which is to step out of mediocrity, and utilize all the assets they've acquired over the year to become a contender.
The only "reason" that McBain is somewhat of an odd fit in Utah is because it would be really hard to have a team where your top 3 centres are all extremely young (Hayton/Cooley/McBain), and McBain viewed as the "3rd best" of those 3.
That being said, he's carved out a decent role on the wing here, so has found his minutes.
Sure, he'd be available in the right deal to acquire a premier player... but they're not going to "sell" on a 24-year old budding power-forward.
Even Crouse, they're so far from the salary cap, and he makes so little these days, and their team is so young, that you'd probably want him in your middle 6 over a Doan/Iginla if that was the choice they're facing.
