I read newspapers daily. Apparently, I'm a dying breed.

Keep it up, friend.

Shawn Mitchell? Aaron Portzline? Who are you!?!

WHO DO YOU WORK FOR!!

I am not in sports media. I am, however, happy to send anyone who likes to read about music a link to my stuff, or for a Facebook/Twitter follow - just PM me.

He said he worked in journalism.

LOL.

So he's probably out of work is what you're saying?

Keeping my fingers crossed.

I was with you Pete but now I read the Dispatch online. So I guess I sort of still read them just not the physical kind. Back in the day I was an avid reader of newspapers reading 3 a day, almost from the time I was old enough to read.

I remember when I was going to college and studying journalism, I would read the NYT, San Jose Mercury News, USA Today and The National (best newspaper EVER) every day. Now….all I do is get information from the web, magazines and TV.

I still love having a physical newspaper to read in the morning; for now, it's the Dispatch. During the day, I catch up online with USAToday (my brother writes for them), my hometown paper (perhaps the worst rag ever), and sports pages from Cleveland and whomever the Jackets played the night before. Soon, the Dispatch will be relegated to the online list and the newsprint will come from the Washington Post.

It really is wonderful to be retired and have time to gather info on whatever topic catches my interest!

I can remember reading 3 (or more) printed newspapers per day.

When I was in college in Philly, I worked for a student newspaper delivery service and read the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, The Bulletin and the NY Times daily. Later on in life it was The Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Post and Mcpaper (USA Today).

Whenever I'm travelling by air, I'll buy a copy of the New York Post if I can.

Printed papers are still essential today....if you have cats. My Wall Street Journal subscription is useful even if I don't read it.

I read two printed newspapers (Cleveland Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon Journal) and the Columbus Dispatch online (would read it printed if I could get it in Cleveland).

I used to read the USA Today, but when the price doubled ($1.00 to $2.00) it wasn't worth buying at the higher price, in my opinion.

Growing up I would literally have ink stains on my elbows from reading the sports pages on the living room floor.
Now I just get the Sunday paper - no real reason to even get that, maybe the coupons? But so much information available on-line.

So if he is granted Chapter 7, the creditors are writing off that debt. His parents seem to be trying their best to stay out of it, but I don't know if that will be the case.

Very strange case. $1,000 on dry cleaning expenses? Must have been one hell of a wedding.

Yes, or an incredible honeymoon?

It sounds to me that Jack's failure to pursue action and his failure to curb his spending may come back to haunt him. It's hard to give him sympathy when it looks like he's not taking it all seriously. I hope he's not getting bad legal advice. It seems like he's not taking responsibility for the actions of his parents and he is not trying to pass the buck for any responsibility onto his parents.

I agree 100%.
Not a lot of sympathy for him. he was also the guy when all this started that bought a brand new Ferrari or porshe (can't remember which one).

Like a lot of people his problem appears to be a spending problem and also (as mentioned) an accountability problem.

Let's hope this doesn't effect him on the ice. When the news first came out about his finances he played pretty poorly for awhile.

I think you meant to say he's taking responsibility for the actions of his parents?

Either way, I read the situation differently. There's not much to gain from suing people who have nothing. Remember, they used his earnings to get things that he is now stuck with and trying to pay off. They likely have no appreciable assets of their own, so is it really worth it to take them to court and spend more money on lawyers to get nothing?

I imagine his little brother factors into this somewhat as well. It might be difficult for Jack to scorch the earth with his parents with lawsuits given that his brother is in the middle of everything.

I think you have this wrong. The only mention of a Ferrari was the hope he maintained of keeping the Ferrari he bought after his first contract. He did not buy it any time after all of this started.

He drives an older Chevy pickup, fwiw. Think a 1500HD or similar. The Ferrari is garaged most of the time, as I understand it.

I don't really understand how people can't have sympathy for him. His parents took advantage of him and racked up huge debts. You could call him naive or stupid, but if you can't trust your parents who can you trust?

It showed up in the Downtown parking garage about the time it all started (3-4 months before Dispatch broke the story, so I'm not sure when the whole thing started but I don't think the Dispatch got the story as it unfolded just when the court docs were released). I know it disappeared in the winter but I assumed it was because it's not much good in Columbus 5 months out of the year anyways.

Also he gave his parents the authority to access his accounts. It was still his accounts so still his responsibility to oversee everything. Just because he ignored what his parents were doing doesn't make him "innocent". Maybe he should have asked "hey nice house, how did you pay for it"...
Now you would hate the think his parents would do that, but it's still his responsibility to monitor and oversee his funds and finances.
