Not a Zegras guy but:
A) Mercer isnt exactly killing it or good with his body
B) Zegras can play C this year and move to wing next if needed
C) Zegras has had good playing driving numbers his career

O'Reilly is the best fit for NJ if they don't want to throw away their season to date.
Brock Nelson would be good too but I don't see Fitzgerald spending significant assets to acquire him, then letting him walk during free agency.
With O'Reilly the team can get a couple of playoff runs with the remaining term on his contract, so Fitzgerald would pay the cost. NJ is up against the cap, so they can fit in O'Reilly by sending Nashville Mercer, while Nelson would be harder to do now without retention and harder to re-sign

Replacing Mercer with RoR isn’t enough help for the Devils . If moving a roster player , it should be one or more of the useless plugs tossed in for cap reasons ( Tatar Haula ) and move one or more of our 3 2nd round picks plus Nemec or Casey or Gritsyuk for someone like McCann or Rakel or ??? Someone with term . Im not giving up Nemec unless it’s for a McCann type player . Maybe Colton becomes available for a 2nd plus ? would that be enough . But we need more help that just Colton . We now need a 2C and probably another C like Evans plus maybe a top 6 winger with term to eventuekky give Jack someone to play with besides useless Palat . So McCann , ROR , Boeser , Rakel , Bjorkstrand , Gourde , Tuch , ????? No clue what Fitz can do .
In ideal dreamworld , add McCann ( Nemec+) RoR ( Mercer ) Evans ( 2nd) and hopefully one more player like a Donato for a 2nd. Huge addition by subtraction to get rid of one or more of Haula / Tatar / Dowling / Bastian / all of which are useless and I’d pay assets to get rid of them . Palat and Mercer too but it would cost too much to dump Palat and not sure what he has for a NMC . Our bottom 6 is terrible and our C depth is non existent after Jack and Nico . Haula or Mercer as our #2 C is pathetic . Dowling as a #3 C …. Yuck . He should not be in the NHL .Neither should Haula and Tatar at this point in their careers .

Who else is looking at Nelson ? Who else would be looking to add a C like him ? I’m just seeing who the Devils would all be bidding against . I’m not sure if the Devils have the right assets to be able to offer . Nemec is an overpayment for a rental . Casey same thing . Everything else is not enough as we don’t have a 1st this year

From my understanding, several teams are looking at Brock. If I were GM, I’d want a young NHL’er or NHL-ready prospect. Perhaps we can throw in Palms for the reunion.
