I’m pretty sure it was Eichel’s right skate clipping Hughes’s right skate that cause the tumble. Either way it’s a bad ending.

Watch the video in the original post, the angle from behind the net. It's a nothing play until the rebound goes out, Hughes and Hanifin each move a skate toward the puck and their skates collide.

I separated my shoulder and was off the ice for 5 months on a surprisingly similar not that bad, nonchalant impact with the boards.

He doesn’t make amazing decisions w the puck. 4 nations proved he’s a low IQ player. Good motor but who is he passing it to, etc. Needs more size or brains.

Yep. He didn't mean for Hughes to blow out his shoulder out against the boards, but he definitely meant to get a piece of him and in a fast-moving sport this is what can happen.

Should have been a penalty on Eichel at minimum.

But the whole reason Hughes fell in the first place is because Hughes reached out his foot in order to kick the pick, which also caused him to lose his balance. If he hadn't, then that would be entirely harmless. Blaming Eichel for this seems like a stretch.

Hughes takes a small kick at it but Eichel takes out Hughes' other skate. That's what makes him lose his balance, otherwise Hughes just makes a fly by kick and swings away below the goal line.

I don't think he "intended" to injure him, but pretty much everyone in the NHL knows how to "accidentally" get a piece of someone, and in a fast game it can lead to horrible results.

Honestly I would have understood if the called 2mins tripping on Eichel... I'm still not sure I'd fully agree with the call, but I could understand the refs making the call. In the same breath though I can also fully understand why they didn't, especially only seeing it once at speed.

Same shoulder, same type of injury, probably same long-term diagnosis. And Vegas is low-key dirty and has been since they debuted in the league with Bettman’s thumb fully on the scale for them, so I’m not giving Jackass Eichel the benefit of the doubt.

Devils won’t make the playoffs now, but what else is new?

If you’re analyzing a play where a player got injured and the team/player on the other side of it has a track record of such plays, you’re looking into it too much. Occam’s razor: Vegas is a chickenshit franchise that has always played dirty, knowing that they’ll get away with it.

I was surprised there wasn’t a penalty called, at least a vague “2 minutes for interference.” At the same time, it looked more innocuous than malicious, but no less unfortunate.

Ironic thing is that Hughes basically had just slew footed someone on the other end of the ice at the beginning of this video.

Anyone insinuating that Eichel intended to clip Hughes skate is clueless. This all happens in a split second. They are all trying to make a play on the puck. It's just an unfortunate incident, which happen all the time in this sport.

They just played together at the 4 nations and Eichel stayed there after checking that he was OK. No malicious intent and looked like 2 guys playing hard and bad result.

Keefe blew a gasket as Hughes was involved in a very similar play earlier in the period and Hughes was penalized leading to a goal against on that PP.

And i’m gonna be there saying that they’re still guilty as hell on that 10th. This is very reminiscent of analyzing the Heiskenan injury to me. Was that malicious? Possibly not. Do they deserve the benefit of the doubt? Hell no.
