Jack Edwards

In this boring-ass season, Jack Edwards is the least of our problems.

I think that people who think he's a clown are living in the past. He has toned it down, reined it in, stabilized.

My only problem with him at this point is his over-reliance on the word "squirt."

I heard Jack's interview on WEEI and at least he was honest. Unlike listening to Bob Bears on his weekly stop in on 98.5. Bears has told us all year Siedenberg is getting more consistent. Well wonder what he thought about the Tampa game. Not blaming Siedenberg entirely but he is the number two D-man and needs to be 100% better.

Naoko was axed for Jamie Erdahl which was an eye candy move. Jamie has since moved on to CBS. Julien was furious when Naoko was canned because she never asked dumb questions. He put up with Jamie for a season but after one preseason game with Guerin he told NESN I want nothing to do with her which is why Jack and Brick do the postgame.

Holy crap, I never really put two and two together this season until now when you mentioned that about the post-game. Seriously, I'd be shocked if they kept Guerin on for more than this season. She's been putrid. I liked Jamie because she was cute and she loved sports. Guerin is cute and all but she's a dunce, terrible personality. Gimme Naoko or Simmer back, please.

when hes on hes really good. He makes games very exciting. When hes off he can come out as kinda an over the top homer. Truth be told there needs to be more jack edwards type pbp guys. He makes bruins games really fun when i watch them and im not even a bruins fan

He genuinely loves hockey an his enthusiasm helps me enjoy it more. Sorry if this was more for bruins fans but ive enjoyed his calls this year and wanted to compliment him some where.

I also agree that hes somewhat under appreciated in the United States. He'd be a huge hit in Canada and probably their star pbp when cole is gone.

He's a homer with regards to penalties and fights. Otherwise I think he calls a fair game and respects when the other team makes a play.

Is he a homer?

Just to ease your stressed minds.

My girlfriend has asked me what Jack's deal is a number of times when I'm watching Bruins games on NHL Gamecentre.

He's a total homer. 100%. I rationalize it as it's like watching a game with a die hard fan of the same team I am cheering for and he's providing the play-by-play. I enjoy it because we're cheering for the same team. If I was not a Bruins fan, I would completely loathe Jack Edwards and his delivery.

I am a hypocrite, but I'm okay with it.

Avs fan here. He calls the game beautifully in terms of actual play-by-play. However, I just can't stand when he calls a fight because it seems like no Bruin has ever lost a fight if you just listen to the audio of Jack Edwards calling it

I think he was at his best doing national broadcasts when he was still a part time NESN announcer. He was always up on all the teams and called it pretty fair. When he does Bruins games he calls them as a Bruins fan would want to hear it like a modern day Johnny Most..

Never should've gotten rid of Naoko in the first place. I know many here hated her, and not saying she was in the right job (wish she got Dale's job instead, people would've liked her a lot better if she was doing that) but she likes hockey and understands it better than these other bimbos. I feel bad for Noako, she's doing news on Comcast Sportsnet NE now and it's clear they told her to act all peppy so when the Celtics won a game recently and she was hyping it all up the floor reporters were being such dicks to her about it.

Didn't know this, figures though if NESN are racist as well as cheap and assume we care about what announcers look like (what do they think we're not going to watch the game if someone is deemed ugly? I didn't find Naoko ugly anyway). I doubt the girls swoon over Jack or Dale now that Tyler is gone. I wonder if Jarvis/Houda/Sacco don't like Austin either since Naoko used to do the off camera interview with them then tell us what they said before the 3rd period and now Brick does those interviews?

Jack is ok.He speaks his mind which is hard not respect.I still am a Cusack guy though.

CuSICK was awesome; erudite, taciturn, old New England. Most people today wouldn't "get him". But there were, "none better", a phase he used often.

Jack is completely different: quick to excite; raucous, sometimes speaks before he thinks, but I love the guy. Hope he's around for a long time.

Bruins fighting ? :amazed:

I may like Jack even less now than ever. Guessing it has to do with listening to him, while watching a very frustrating Bruins season.

As far as being a homer when it comes to fights/penalties, I can forgive that to a degree. It depends on what you think the role of a pbp should be. I know some folks think it should be 100% objective journalism, but the audience clearly wants a little editorializing as well.

In a sense, I think of Edwards as a lawyer for the prosecution (or defense, depending on the case). He's not obligated to elaborate endlessly on both sides of the story - he's trying to get you to render the verdict that he wants by making logical arguments. Get the clip from the other pbp, and you'll likely find the opposite arguments being made. The truth is often in the middle.

And I actually DO note that Edwards doesn't reserve his enthusiasm solely for players in Black and Gold. He'll hoot and holler for the other team (well, maybe except the Habs) if they make a great play.

I know we avoid the tabloid stuff here, but again, being out of market I read the rumors that, that indeed was the reason Funayama was let go.

It seems odd to me because - and again I don't get the pregame or post-game stuff on NESN - her onscreen time is minimal at best. The only times I ever actually see her is a quick side shot before the camera zooms in on whatever player is being interviewed.

I certainly don't watch for eye candy, I'm just pointing out that I agree Funayama did a great job, and if she was indeed fired for that reason, it's even more senseless for what little screen time her replacement gets. Does that really translate to noticeably better ratings?

I think they do that because she is kind of a bobble head. For the first few games she remained in the frame and her nodding as the players spoke was mesmerizing. If Austin is replaced, I hope it isn't for Sarah Davis. Fills the eye candy quota but her voice hurts my ears. They are probably both nice people but I'm having a ****** Monday.

I miss Rob Simpson. Poor guy got the Mike Sullivan, Dave Lewis era.

I like guys that get fired up like him. Makes me remember how much I miss Gus Johnson doing NFL games. He'd just lose it up in the booth with any big play.

Is he a homer? Yes, but what team-employed PXP person isn't? He has a tremendous passion for this team and for the craft, and it shows.

A couple of things I notice about Jack - and I study broadcasting closely as a PXP person myself - is that he is intensely prepared, and he also doesn't take himself, or the broadcast, too seriously. He has a good time and the enjoyment of his craft really shows.

I, honestly, learn something about hockey every time I watch Jack & Brick. I don't say that often about a broadcast. I also am usually entertained, even when the game is terrible (which, unfortunately, has been the case far too often this year). When I was doing some radio color commentary last year, a lot of what I knew to look for (positioning, "triangles", et al) came from watching Andy Brickley break down highlights, but Jack Edwards has to know enough about the game to help set him up, too.

I have always (okay, maybe not always...but for many years) have appreciated Jack's preparation. Listen to pretty much any other announcer and you'll start to notice. Jack knows how to pronounce every name, he knows a little bit about every team, he has respect for the other teams' skills, etc.

Sure, the guy gets carried away at times, and I have certainly cringed while watching his broadcasts before, but I appreciate his love and knowledge of the game. This is, of course, confirmed in plenty of his radio bits.

Funny reading all the Naoko love here after it was probably 95% hating on her when she was employed by NESN and begging for Kathryn Tappen to return.

Don't get me wrong. If I had the choice of Naoko or Tappen, I'd choose Tappen 110 times out of 100.

Hell, I'd take Jamie over Naoko as well. I'd just take Naoko over the crap we have right now.
