My guess is if Islanders can make a big UFA signing he will be the guy they dump. Probably for like a future 2nd rounder(doesn't have to be 2026). My guess he would be more likely to be traded July 2nd rather than at or before the draft

As it stands now I slot him as Islanders 2nd line center with Horvat and Barzal playing together, Ritchie being weened in as a 3rd line center. If we can sign a big name we split up Horvat and Barzal

If he’s moved it’s without retention (or a useless player contract wise coming back) at all and will probably be at the deadline if retention comes into play at all.

To retain and get back a contract is just stupidity on the Islanders part. They’re not a dumping grounds for other teams garbage.
If a team wants retention, the price goes up in terms of the quality of the pick. Personally no interest to retain 50% and get back a 3rd and 5th for him.

Teams that are retooling and rebuilding are dumping grounds. Take the best picks and prospects you can get. Aim for the playoffs in 2-3 years time

Yeah, not interested in retaining half & taking on a contract with a larger cap hit (and in some instances term) just to get a couple of 3rds because Edmonton wants a player.

Essentially if Pageau is a $5m cap hit and the Isles retain 50% plus take on another $4m cap hit in return the trade has to be worth it for the cap addition and a couple of mid round picks really aren’t worth it in the Islanders case.
