- Jones literally just said that he'd love to go back to Columbus

- Retaining half is insane. The Hawks aren't paying $5m a year for Jones to play in Columbus unless the Jackets are sending a high end prospect or two back.

- Provorov makes no sense to Chicago, he wouldn't do it and neither would they. Provorov is more suitable for playing a middle role on a very good team, than he is for playing a top role on a bad one.

- I'm not sure Jones should be a Jackets target, the Jackets need a high end defender not another offensive guy.

- If they did want Jones, an even swap around Severson and Jones would make more sense. You can then add some retention in exchange for draft picks if the clubs want to do that.

The Hawks will be hard pressed to give Jones away without sending something significant with him. Which they can't do. So getting someone to take that cap hit for 5 more years will be the win. He is awful.

Severson and Jones swap makes more sense as noted above. Both locked into long term deals that are overpays at this point for the on ice production. Chicago gets a lower cap hit, while Columbus gets the better player at a higher cap hit. CBJ have a ton of cap space so might make sense, but I feel like most CBJ fans would think there is a better use of money there...especially if they plan on going big game hunting for a UFA this summer to round out the roster. And Severson has been playing noticeably better lately after his benching...so not seeing much upside for Columbus here. If anything were to happen here, I feel like it would be at the end of the off-season if CBJ strikes out on UFA targets. In general, that probably is when Jones would be moved, no way its at the deadline.

He's overpaid yes, but to say he's awful is just fundamentally wrong. He is absolutely still a 1st pair caliber defenseman and thinking Chicago will have to pay to move him is hilarious

Be interesting to see what the return is then. If pro scouts watched him the last two nights.. their reports won't be glowing.

With Seth Jones wanting out of Chicago, Chicago needs a puck-moving defenseman, and Columbus isn’t willing to pay Provorov what he’s asking. That said, Provorov has played well this season, and if given a long-term deal and a top-pairing role, he’d likely re-sign. Trading him for just a first-round pick doesn’t make sense when we’re pushing for the playoffs, we need to fill his spot, not create another hole.

I don’t want to move Provorov, he’s been a steady veteran presence alongside Matlanchuk, but we are not paying him what he wants and we're are not making a deep push so its a hard spot IMO.

We get Seth Jones at five years for $5 million, providing us with a capable replacement right away and for the next 5 years. Meanwhile, Chicago gets a chance to lock up a proven top-four defenseman who can step into a top-pairing role if needed.

Jones also played well in Columbus before, and with our GM looking to make a true hockey move, this deal feels like the right balance between addressing the present and planning for the future. We don’t need more picks, we need roster players who can help us now.
Big pass. Jones is a downgrade and adds another long term deal to a team that is looking to upgrade. Where does he fit on the right side? Not really interested in a RHD group of Jones, Severson and Gudbranson (1 yr), if they aren't re-signing Fabbro.

If they move Provorov, it isn't to bring in Jones. This would simply be a terrible move even at $5MM AAV. What else is Chicago sending to take him? I want no part of Jones on this team. Especially for another 5 years.

This is so silly. Jones wouldn't go back, publicly stating he's looking for a chance to win. He'd veto this in a second, not like the Hawks would begin to entertain it.

So Columbus gets a 30yo RD for $4.75 at 5 years, Chicago downgrades to 28yo LD Provorov for about $8 at 8 years? All this while Hawks biggest up and comers are D.
I agree. This is silly. Jones left Columbus because they were beginning a re-build. They are now well into that process and, if you haven't looked, actually a good team with a very young roster. So, if he rejected moving to Columbus, it's not because they aren't a winner. As for moving and being a downgrade from Provorov... that too is untrue. Provorov doesn't provide the offense, but he's a much better fit in Columbus and can eat minutes and not hurt you. Columbus isn't looking to add another long term deal for an older player that's clearly not on the upswing. I don't hate Jones, but he's a terrible fit in Columbus now. This move makes zero sense for Columbus, even with retained money. His age and term is not a fit for what he offers. I think Columbus can do better with assets and actually bring in an upgrade if they go that route on the back end. Personally, Fabbro is a really good fit with Werenski and a much cheaper option. What really impacts CBJ is the Severson deal for 6 more years.
