With Seth Jones wanting out of Chicago, Chicago needs a puck-moving defenseman, and Columbus isn’t willing to pay Provorov what he’s asking. That said, Provorov has played well this season, and if given a long-term deal and a top-pairing role, he’d likely re-sign. Trading him for just a first-round pick doesn’t make sense when we’re pushing for the playoffs, we need to fill his spot, not create another hole.

I don’t want to move Provorov, he’s been a steady veteran presence alongside Matlanchuk, but we are not paying him what he wants and we're are not making a deep push so its a hard spot IMO.

We get Seth Jones at five years for $5 million, providing us with a capable replacement right away and for the next 5 years. Meanwhile, Chicago gets a chance to lock up a proven top-four defenseman who can step into a top-pairing role if needed.

Jones also played well in Columbus before, and with our GM looking to make a true hockey move, this deal feels like the right balance between addressing the present and planning for the future. We don’t need more picks, we need roster players who can help us now.

I don't see Chicago entertaining 50% retention unless the deal blows their socks off - which this doesn't.

Edit:
Jones at 9.500 has negative value
Jones at 4.750 has fairly significant value

But they already have that in Jones. Why would they want to make this trade just to pay Proverov whatever he’s asking for plus almost an extra $5 million a year in retention in Jones? They’d end up paying more per season after this trade while downgrading from Jones to Proverov.

This is so silly. Jones wouldn't go back, publicly stating he's looking for a chance to win. He'd veto this in a second, not like the Hawks would begin to entertain it.

So Columbus gets a 30yo RD for $4.75 at 5 years, Chicago downgrades to 28yo LD Provorov for about $8 at 8 years? All this while Hawks biggest up and comers are D.

I don't think Jones would Veto a trade to Columbus immediately as they're an up and coming team further along in their rebuild than Chicago. They're in the playoff hunt this season and they've been decimated by injuries and have prospects coming for next year with cap space up the wazoo. He'd also get to play with Werenski again.

But Chicago is not going to need to retain half is salary for any trade let alone this one. Sure, they would do it if he only had a year or 2 left on his deal but $4.75M and a retention slot for 5 years is a tough pill to swallow. I think Columbus would see his contract a little differently than most as they're going to be flirting with the cap floor in the coming years but Chicago would still want either a young forward or draft picks.

Makes no sense to downgrade from Jones without any cap relief, which we don’t need anyway. And since in this proposal we would be paying more overall there is really no logic to it for Chicago. We need forwards or forward prospects.

Honestly this is ridiculously bad, the Hawks are going to retain $4.75m on Jones just to get back a downgrade in Provorov who is on an expiring deal!?

Not to mention you are getting back a LHD… some of the Hawks best young players/prospects are LHD. Vlasic, Allan, Korchinski, Del Mastro, Kaiser.

He just had a dinner with Jackets players and Werenski publicly stated he wouldn’t mind playing with Jones again, so it’s not as simple here.

Provorov isn't worth what he's asking so in effect CHI would end up paying a lot more than what Provorov is asking for a guy who isn't worth it.

Genius.

No way in hell.

Let’s just say Provorov signs 7x7, Chicago is essentially paying 11.75 for provorov instead of just keeping jones at 9.5.

The problem here is that Jones is still owed $41M after this season.

So not only do you have to convince a team that the trade is worth it... You then have to convince Rocky Wirtz that whatever they're receiving is worth $20.5M to get Jones off the team.

... And this is a team that will likely have to throw away cap to reach the floor anyways, with all the ELCs they'll have.
