Ivan Fedotov: Why is he so bad?

It was quite the story when he was signed by the Flyers only for him to be arrested and literally sent to Siberia to serve time for allegedly trying to escape military service.

As a 6'7, 27 y/o with incredible stats in the KHL, he seemed primed to step into a starter role and follow the footsteps of countrymen Shesterkin, Sorokin, Vasilevskiy, and Bobrovsky.
He's currently got an .881 sv% and a 6-13-3 record, after putting up an .811 in 3 games last season. So what's the deal, is it just cause Philly sucks, or is he simply not an NHL-quality goaltender?

His KHL stats weren't actually that good. There were a whopping 42 goalies above a .910 in his last KHL season, Fedotov's .914 was 35th.

As for more of a qualitative answer -- he's literally just big. Doesn't track the puck well, doesn't move well, not great rebound control, and on and on. Just huge

...as a 6'7 former goalie who wasn't that good because I was "just big", this is exactly what I see with Fedotov...his positioning is very flawed, he doesn't track well, he doesn't control his movement well, he doesn't seem to understand how to use his paddle (stick), etc...he's just big...

Fedotov was never that good to begin with.

He had 1 great outlier year (and playoffs) in the KHL, surrounded by a career of mediocrity.

For a dude who's the size of a house he moves way too much.

I think because of his size he's slow to move side-to-side, so he might out extra power into it to get over a bit faster, but then slides too far a lot it seems.

Tall goalies are extremely overrated in general, 0 goalies over 6'5 have won a Vezina post lockout and 1 6'5 goalie. When a casual fan sees a 6'5, 6'6, 6'7, 6'8 goalie, they think they looking at a possible legend, the numbers don't bear that out at all.

It also doesn't help that all goalies lie about their height, most embellish by an inch or even two. But beyond 6'4, height really is more of a liability than a help. Although I'm not sure if it'll ever go out of fashion, shorter goalies aka ones that are sub 5'8 have no spot in the NHL because extreme reflexes and speed dont' make up for their height deficiency, but that same logic isn't applied for extremely tall goalies.

Basically we need 100 more Koskinens.
