Player Discussion Ivan Demidov: Welcome to Montreal

He looked even better than I expected. Maybe it was partly because it was against Chicago, but he seemed just as dangerous as he was over in the KHL.

If they were to put him on the 1st line next year (I know they won't), then I could easily see him having an 80 point rookie season and Suzuki hitting 100. Conversely, I could see Slaf having a 30-40 point season if he's taken off the 1st line:dunno:

C’mon guys, don’t do that. Don’t blame Guhle for Demidov’s poor effort on that back check. It doesn’t do him or any of us any service.

Guhle likely shouldn’t have been that deep in the zone, but he was and Demidov was the man back in this situation and had to try to skate to catch the streaking Reichel. Full stop.

This is the stuff he needs to adjust to, and it won’t take long because he’s an insanely special and gifted player.

Will be our best forward for a long long time.

I'm just here to read all the homers that watch RDS for opinions, then come here to repeat it as their own. 'Demdiov needs to learn defense and a 200ft game' 'His backcheck isn't good enough'

But Carrier, Savard, local boy Matheson were all fine, and we all know why.

Kid is an absolute stud

Don't be so sure that he won't get bumped down to the second line. If Slaf keeps sleepwalking through games 50% of the time, it would be gross negligence not to demote him.

It's just a game, but there were a few times where i was thinking "oh , the guy has this opening if he is quick enough" and then he would go there. I play nhl videogame and i see this from above. To be able to see this and go there in in time to me is amazing.

I get it's one game and adrenaline, and habs fans wanting him to become a superstar, but my first impression was a good one. Well done!

Also, i dont know if anyone else noticed, but him and Newhook seem to have chemistry. In fact, i was thinking Demidov was looking like the center out of the two :D

He does need to learn to backcheck but he'll do that by playing games and making mistakes. He cost us a goal yesterday but created two and several more tap ins that were missed by his linemates. It's likely SKA plays a difference coverage system and he didn't realize the guy skating past him was his duty instead of Guhle's.

I thought Newhook looked very good beside Demidov. Agree with your there. Newhook is a burner and processes the game at a high level. He just can't finish. Sometime one player can unlock another one (see MacKinnon and Lehks).

I want to see this experiment carry on for a lot longer.

I agree. It will hopefully give us two lines that can score 5v5.

I have less of an issue with the lazy backcheck, mainly because I don't think he was being lazy just think he was clearly gassed, I have more of an issue with the bad shot selection that led to the goal.

Also, Hutson could have played that a bit better, was probably better served playing the 2 on 1 vs trying to force the puck carrier to make the only pass he could make.

All in all, who cares though...let's not micro analyze a single mistake because the rest of his game was insane.

Maybe it was adrenaline, but if that's anything close to what we can expect...he just might be HIM.
Where was Guhle? He was way too deep in the Hawks zone, that’s where.

The entire team needs to learn how to play in its own end. There were stretches where the Hawks looked like the 77 Canadiens. Bedard was running around untouched doing wheelies for f*** sakes.

It was a really bad back check, no question. I blame Guhle for his stupid hit!

Demidov is already so deceptive; it's insane.

That being said, he will need to cut down on the long shifts. That one 4 on 4 shift that he stayed on for a while (for a chunk of the PP as well) gassed him. You could see in the next few shifts that he was not fully recovered yet. On that backcheck, he as completely gassed. It might be the jetlag, so I'm not holding him accountable for it.

Also, shame on Newhook for missing so many grade A chances and especially missing that easy pass to spring Demidov on the breakaway in the OT.

Boys read to much HFBoards about Bedard being a bust so left him alone. He's still got a chance to tie Lane Hutson in points.

This is a low level analysis, Demidov is new into a new club, he doesn’t know the system, how the coach wants players to play, how he wants his forwards to defend etc

He said the game is faster

This is a nothing burger

Watch Bedard and all the young prospects how bad they are at back checking

Hes far from being the worst

Whats important here is that hes there and hes trying

I give 2 rats about his defensive play, he scored 2 pts and could have scored a few more. Its up to the team to adjust and realise be better
okay, but he quit on the play.

It was a lesson, and hopefully he'll never do it again.

Yes, this idea that if a defensemen is pinching and a Hab forces a shot and turns over the puck and then doesn't get back as last man back, it is the fault of the pinching defenseman is silly.

Hutson, because of his overcommitment, and especially Demidov (turnover, and no backcheck) are to blame for the goal.

I think Ds need to be self-aware. If Matheson is in OT he needs to be aware that Laine is on the ice with him.

Perhaps. But I have the perspective that a pinch is only as bad as whether there is someone to cover for you or not. There was someone to cover for him - it's not like he left the team stranded. The covering forward just happened to give up the puck on a forced shot.
