Player Discussion Ivan Demidov: Welcome to Montreal

Yup, I was expecting way more after his elite performance in his first NHL game and all the hype surrounding him being the best player outside the NHL by a big margin.

Imo, big part of it is because the Chicago Blackhawks are that bad. He probably played vs AHL level defense, no joke.

The NHL playoffs is an entirely different story. It's like he has no space to do his magic against a NHL caliber defense...

He is still going to be elite, but he probably still needs 2 or 3 years before reaching that status.

You were saying?

What Demidov does for the Habs power play is something I have not seen in a while.

His weapon is motion. I've seen so many Habs PPs where each player is stationary at their position, passing, passing back, etc. Demidov finds a way to skate with the puck and cover a meaningful amount of ground.

I don't quite understand what goes into that, but I see the difference. He also ends up opening up space for all of the other players by doing so.

He's creative. Will make a play rather than just pass pass pass.

In one word:

He is 'Kovalev-esque'.

We haven't had a player like this, since... Kovalev, IMO.

My memory of Kovalev is getting rusty, but,

Kovalev was 35 when he was with the Habs. Had more experience and more man strength. Probably less speed though.

Also so much motion on this power play right now.

Did he shoot? I find he always passes instead. He needs to stop having the rookie mentality.
Did you see his backhand shot on his first NHL goal? His backhand shot is special.

He's going to score a lot of goals because of it.

I'm repeating my self...because my needle is stuck...

Demidov reminds me of Kovalev. His moves and puck control, but less stronger and not that deadly wrist shot. BUT...he's only 19 and by mid 20s he will be just as strong, I can't say how much he will develop that wrister. However Demi has more agile skating and most important, wants to win.

Kovi was a bit on the lazy side and tried to skate by on minimum effort, but whenever he felt like it, he was elite.

I'm putting Demi on a pedestal because he's also elite.
