The thing is most NHL players would have the same work/life balance and the same personal commitments no matter any "franchise" (I hate calling sports teams Franchises... they're not Subway Sandwich shops!). The differences are reduced and thus then get magnified: cost of living, taxes, quality of the city, quality of the "franchise", likelihood of success, "vibes", etc.

For a lot of players since playing in city X is more or less the same as playing in city Y, they have every reason to chase the bag.

Rantanen is a top player in the NHL, his playoff PPG is that of a 100pt player (!!!), with the cap going up he will get paid and maybe will get the biggest UFA contract in NHL history. He'll have earned it.
Im not arguing against "worth" to a lesser team.. but Stamkos comes to mind, im sure he regrets chasing the dough to the Nashville.. he had such a great gig in TB.

The equation GMs need to consider is: $14m Rantannen + $1m journeyman vs CC + NS (which better insurance against injury)?

Not sure what happened between TB and Stamkos but it could be as simple as they simply couldn't afford him even at 8m.

That's not a real equation.

It's [14m UFA + 1m acquisition] vs [7.5m UFA/acquisition + 7.5m UFA/acquisition]

They had our number indeed, but the rivalry was quite high. fuelled even more by the hate of losing.
I really never hated a team more then those bruins. in a way, if you beat a rival consistently you tend to hate them less no?
i think there has been so much history between these both teams............the hate will reignite after one playoff game. Fans, Media, and of course the players............it goes both ways and it's crazy!
Nothing like Bruins/Habs rivalry

whatever it is I for one would like to see us nab a superstar for three years to coincide with Demidov's ELC. not doing so will waste a huge opportunity to chase the cup.

Which Superstar could we grab for three years?

Also, please be aware that Demidov will likely cost us 4.65M or so as a rookie, not chump change exactly when trying to fit another Superstar under the Cap ceiling.

Overall skilled depth will give us a shot at the Cup, not fitting in a huge contract and liquidating skill on then third and fourth lines.

I'd spend money on a RHD UFA like Pionk, for example I'm running with some other poster's suggestion) and ice a top-4 of...

Guhle - Pionk
Hutson - Matheson

...to start the season while Reinbacher plays in Laval at the beginning of next year. When we move Matheson at the trade deadline, we can pair up Hutson with Reinbacher:

Guhle - Pionk
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Carrier/Mailloux/Engstrom

If not Pionk (29, RHD),

Chychrun (26, LHD)
Ekblad (28, RHD)
Ceci (31, RHD)
Lindgren (26, LHD)
Provorov (28, LHD)

are the only interesting Ds (of which there are only 2 RHDs) who can also potentially become UFAs at the end of this year.

Unless you want a cheaper gamble on the mobile Dante Fabbro who can also potentially become an UFA at the end of this season?

Pionk, Hutson and Matheson on the top 4???

The old Bruins/Habs rivalry was always intense, but it was eclipsed by the 'Battle of Quebec'. At it's peak, there was nothing crazier in North American sports.

Fights would break out between reporters covering the teams on press row. The Good Friday Brawl etc. Don't forget that every year at the draft they would try to out maneuver each other just to grab the top rated Quebecois player.

That great philosophy got the Habs the 'wonderful' Jose Charbonneau one year. :help:.

100pct agrée. When I see younger fans speaking of a leafs rivalry, I realise how much a whole generation missed due to to the team being notoriously bad

Out of curiosity (please educate me) how can an ELC be ~$4.5m?

Maybe im missing something, but i thout ELC for top tier players was ~$1M/Yr x 3.

Im not a fan of Pionk, so if i had my choice I'd go after Ekblad to hold the RHD spot until RB is ready (which he currently is not).
I think it's clear Mailloux will be dealt. So that means either RB is a #1-3, and we will have no idea until next year.
If we want to capitalize on our youth balance, we're going to need a star RHD defender to hold the fort for 3 years. If we can trade for that #2C our lineup becomes quite scary good.

CC - Suz - Slaf
Laine - UFA - Demidov
Heinman - Hage - Dach
Xhekaj- Beck - Tuch

Guhle - (Ekblad)
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Carrier

Dobes
Fowler

This imo is a SC contender (assuming the 2c would be legit)

Therefore all other assets should be considered to prepare for this:
Roster Trade fodder:
Evans
Monty
Armia
Matheson
Anderson
Dvo
Newhook
Struble
Savard

AHL Depth trade fodder:
Kapanen
Mailloux
Roy
Engstrom
Mesar

Give something to lose:
Gally
Pez

Draft picks this year and next...

The rebuild is over this summer. Starting next season i expect a rookie contender. Anything less would be pathetic.
