Prospect Info: Ivan Demidov (2024 5th OA): SKA St. Petersburg (KHL)

I saw the video. They come back on the 2024 draft. Discuss how it was difficult to properly gauge the strength of the MHL and to thus evaluate Demidov properly.
The fact Demidov's "absolutely torching" the KHL changes their perception. Much easier to judge now how transferable his skills are to the NHL.
It's very laudatory. Not much new to posters here but the fact they are not Habs fans brings a different perspective.

They also don’t really touch on how Demidov is putting #s compared to those under 20 players despite way less ice time, not just about games played.

Josh Leivo, a Salvat Yulaev player about Ivan Demidov (sorry my English)

Can Ivan Demidov become a Montreal superstar?

- I haven't seen many of his games, but I've formed an idea of this guy. And people tell me about him sometimes. Absolutely, he looks like a potential superstar. What pick did Montreal pick him at the draft? The fifth pick? Well, that's a steal. It's obvious that Demidov is going to grow into an elite player. Look at what he's showing now. But what happens when he goes to the NHL and settles in?

Props to you as a Bruins fan for posting this because many on your board do not wish us any form of goodwill lol. We are looking forward to October and seeing how his skills translate at the NHL level.

many don’t realize when Montreal is really good like they were in the 70’s specifically how the rivalry and sports hate was special

They were so good it was as a kid seeing hockey gods live

I was a Bruins fan but I loved Yvan Cournoyer

I agree, no rivalry in pro sport came close to peak Habs vs Bruins. The intensity and hate made every game a playoff atmosphere. I have been around for a long time as well and have seen so many great battles between our teams, specifically the late 70s and through the 80's, man it was so good. I am a third-generation Habs fan, there was no other team for me and I still follow as passionately as ever but it isn't the same now. I look forward to seeing it come back because games against Seattle and Columbus don't have the same meaning for me and you probably feel the same way.

the late 60’s to 1979 Canadiens were as good as it gets. The old Forum. Bobby Orr & Esposito v Belliveau, Richard, LaFleur, the Mahavolichs

Incredible times

It was a magical era for hockey and it was a time when the NHL should have become one of the premiere sports in North America but oh well, it was our world to enjoy. Things have changed now, 32 teams and more player movement has watered down the rivalries of old but at least we have the memories of what was.

Every season we just keep adding above average players to the roster, all of them under 30. And unlike past years the Habs have actual talented, impact players who have a proper supporting group. By the time Demidov enters the fold, it will push the forwards into the right chairs, sort of like how Carrier did for the defence. The critical mass of talent is almost there. Very exciting times

I think the one thing players (mainly agents) are hell bent on getting the highest pay. While that sounds wonderful in theory, it is ruinous in practice.
There are "plenty" of jobs I could have taken (that paid more) and simply weighed the culture, work-life balance and quality of life/success against salary.
Pro Sports (NHL especially) is no different. If I'm a GM i am following the Colorado model. Screw that, if the Mikko wants 14million and it simply makes no sense, then trade him (let Carolina deal with him).
Players will come to realize that they "can" get more but at what cost?

Option 1= be a Superstar earning $9million/year and winning cups, or at least carving out a legacy.

Option 2= be a superstar earning $14million/year not winning cups, lacking back up, no depth and living with headaches

Are "we" the regular sports fan ever going to realize the difference between having ~$60Million or $~$80million. ? Never. But imo anything above $20Million is a disgusting amount of money to play a sport, considering this amount could/should set you up for life.

He wasn't though.

When he was drafted, he was in the gym the next day. They didn't insulate him at all, he fell into a bad crowd, they brought worse people like Kassian in, and it all de-railed from there.

Later in life, yes, he made things worse and didn't help himself. But Bergevin didn't insulate him at all and unfortunately he had a penchant to go after the things Montreal can provide when you are young, attractive, and a face of the Montreal Canadiens.

I have no concerns about Demidov because he's driven, already has a girlfriend, and is already exposed to some of the temptations in Russia that he'd get here and has avoided them. And he's coming into a room of good veterans, no bad influences, good kids around his age that are similarly focused on improving and winning, and a management team taht knows how important it is to surround their kids appropriately.
I don’t know, that incident with the cops seems like someone who may have had bigger problems than just falling into the wrong crowd.

For all his gym rat hype it barely showed on the ice over a 4 year period. Just like Cammy.

I don’t think MB did a great job with our players and it’s probably the biggest strike against him but I don’t know if what happened in AZ and Galch’s precipitous fall from grace could be really blamed on MB. No one likes Gallagher but he didn’t end up a borderline psychopath

The thing is most NHL players would have the same work/life balance and the same personal commitments no matter any "franchise" (I hate calling sports teams Franchises... they're not Subway Sandwich shops!). The differences are reduced and thus then get magnified: cost of living, taxes, quality of the city, quality of the "franchise", likelihood of success, "vibes", etc.

For a lot of players since playing in city X is more or less the same as playing in city Y, they have every reason to chase the bag.

Rantanen is a top player in the NHL, his playoff PPG is that of a 100pt player (!!!), with the cap going up he will get paid and maybe will get the biggest UFA contract in NHL history. He'll have earned it.

The difference between Gallagher and Galchenyuk, other than the spelling of their names which most people get right away, is that, as a smallish player, Gallagher had to fight for everything he got, while Galchenyuk, as the only male child in a culture that puts the boy on a pedestal, was heralded by his family (and viewed as a cash cow).

Your personality and character forged by your family while you are growing up makes a big difference.

Nothing like the Bruins and Habs rivalry. Pure hockey hatred at times.
So many good series in the playoffs over the years.
Bruins always had great teams, and the Habs did also...............we need another playoff series between these two teams!!

even late 80

even late 80s early 90, the rivalry was insane. God i hate neely and lemlin and bourque and andy moog!
Of note..........Roy never beat the Bruins in the playoffs.......and truth be told they beat him like a rented mule in the playoffs.
They had our number for those years...........it was hard to watch!! lol

As for Demidov..........what a steal at 5 for the boys!!! He will be a star, out of the gate.

They had our number indeed, but the rivalry was quite high. fuelled even more by the hate of losing.
I really never hated a team more then those bruins. in a way, if you beat a rival consistently you tend to hate them less no?

To me it’s all about top 6 today

Can you put out 4-6 guys who are offensively skilled and can score 25+ goals and/or 60+ points

Demidov just adds to Caufield & Suzuki as you develop others in that group

I’m a huge Caufield guy - my daughter who’s hard core Bruins even bought his shirt in the pro shop between periods lol

These guys are the best in the world and all power to them if they can get paid insane amounts of money for doing what they love. If Demidov becomes a superstar the Habs will have to pay him a large salary to keep him as well.

Since I've achieved consciousness and started cheering for sports teams (full disclosure.. Habs and Blue Jays as the Expos were a tiny bit before my time) my teams have one had the #1 prospect in the entire sport once and that was Vladdy Jr. The Habs have never had it (Slaf was picked #1 but it was covid/pretty disputed at the time and he made the jump right away).

Needless to say I am hyped up for this kid.

Vlad Jr is ok, the real Vladdy was something else, hopefully Demidov is more like him ;)
