They were trying so hard to find that ever elusive big center for the clearly diminishing Lafleur. Drafting for presumed need at the top of the draft over the best player(s) available allows you to pass on Coffey, etc.

There's a reason why we have only won two Cups over the past half century. As Bobby Knight loved to say: Dumb always loses.

Wickenheiser wasn't bad luck. It was really, really bad development. He was a can't miss prospect and we did everything we could to undermine him.

After those 70s teams we just seemed to be so obsessed with defensive, grinding play. We really lost sight of skill and offense. I'm so glad that's changing with the new regime. Happening at exactly the right time for the guys we're drafting.

Galchnyuk was the right guy and badly mismanaged. It was a weak draft and he had his issues but that's been discussed already in this thread. KK was mismanaged as well but he was also the wrong pick. :laugh:

Yes, our herd was very happy with the Galchenyuk pick on draft day and for a few years after it as well. Yay, we drafted a C/LW type and expected him to be a franchise center. What could go wrong? :facepalm:

Galchenyuk had the talent and if he had a better head on his shoulders and better entourage and support system, he would have had a great career I think.

KK was a reach because we needed a centre and his talent was grossly overrated. He was a very safe high floor, low ceiling type player.

Wickenheiser was universally seen as a can't miss prospect. He was the best prospect in the draft.

Claude Ruel wanted Denis Savard and was overruled. He was our coach here and basically did what he could to undermine Wickenheiser. It worked. They ruined him.

Notice btw, that Trevor Timmins' late picks have suddenly started panning out. The guy who apparently couldn't draft his way out of a paper bag had a pretty good record before MB took over. Then suddenly couldn't draft. And now all of his late picks are panning out now that MB is gone.

Development matters. We haven't concentrated on offensive talent in so long... now FINALLY we have a group that understands that you need to be able to score to win. Thrilled to see what Demidov will do with us now that these stupid shackles are off.

Kotkaniemi had size. Low to average grades in skill and skating. Hockey IQ was OK. This is usually a pick in the 15+ range of the 1st round but because the center depth was weak in that draft, we reached big time.

I get the same vibes with Reinbacher but at least he has high grades in size and skating. Skill? Not sure. I think that is average grade. Hockey IQ? Also not sure. We will see.

We drafted the best player available. Unfortunately it was a weak draft. Funny, our first number one overall in 30+ years was in a weak draft too. Still think Slaf will be a really good player but he won't be at that crazy level that some other number ones get to. Won't matter though because we wound up drafting a superstar at 62nd overall anyway.

As God is my witness. If we'd drafted Hutson under the old regime, Therrien would be trying to 'fix' him. And by 'fix' I mean 'coaching' the skill right out of his game. That was what we did here for years. Demidov, Hutson, Caufield... they might not have been ruined but they would've been hindered. Now they won't have that problem. I can't wait to see how Demidov plays next year. I've only seen clips but he looks freaking awesome.

Yes, I think most of us agree Chucky was a good pick in the BPA narrative. We didn't manage him that well but we also had a crap roster with holes to fill and Galchenyuk's commitment to improving was weak. Good pick but bad results.

Slaf will be fine IMO. I think we get a few 60-80 pts seasons from him and when we look back at age 30, his averages are around 60-70 pts but he brings a physical edge. Regardless of points, we need this big frame on our roster. He's only going to get stronger and more comfortable in the physical areas of the game.

Yeah, thank god we have Gorton/Hughes/MSL because the old managers would have beaten Hutson down like they did with Caufield.

That 2012 draft was a very weird one. Tell me the last time the the top 4 drafted players were all bust and the only forward that became good players dropped out of the top 10. With hindsight trading down would have been the smart move but this is re-visiting history as Galchenyuk and Yakupov were considered (as pre draft hype) potential superstar forward. I also remember a lot of hype on Forsberg, Terevainen and Hertl but they were considered very good talent but with lesser top end potential. With hindsight it is quite funny to see how draft hype can be deceptive like that.
