You do NOT get rd as good as Reinbacher in a trade very often,
Neither do we know for certain how good he can be or if his knee issues are behind him. Plus, he may or may not be offensively productive. I’d rather wait and see and then assess.

Not convinced he should have been the pick but I’m hoping he proves otherwise.

Oh … it’s a Demidov thread?

Now, Demidov — talk about an indisputable selection where the Habs got him.

Obviously to get to play in the playoffs and burn a year off UFA status.

He's already playing in the playoffs. Had a full season playing with pros as is, needs to focus on getting stronger and more explosive. Maybe my opinion would be different if he was a year older, or coming out of college with the shorter schedule.

Buying out a contract with two months remaining in this situation seems silly and short term focused at best, and there is zero guarantee Habs make the playoffs anyway.

Why would Demidov bother buying out a contract that's about to end anyway?
I think that was the issue between him and the team. They reportedly didn't want him to re-sign to stay but so that they would get a buyout lump from him at the end of the season. I don't know enough about KHL rules but maybe rookies can't buy out their version of entry level contracts?

Any player can unilaterally terminate his contract by paying 2/3 his salary and giving 16 months prior notice.
Obviously Demidov didnt do this.

That said, contract termination by mutual consent is still an option. There aren’t any rules governing mutual termination.

I don’t know why people want to rush things.

Because it would be beneficial to burn a year so we can sign him to an extention before the cap goes up an extra 15mil in 27 months, added to the 10 mil from July 2025 and 2026. We burn a year, we can already sign him to his second contract in summer 2026. In summer 2027, the cap will be close to 115 mil. We also get to re-sign him with only his rookie season played, where he has less mileage and numbers to ask for more.
