They would have to make a deal to get him to come once their playoffs end. His contract is until end of May.

Otherwise yeah, if they don't want him this year they can just wait.

I'm pretty sure if he came over and played 10 playoff games then he'd burn a year of his ELC. I could see Hughes not wanting to do that. We're very clearly not winning the cup this season, but we could be in a fantastic position to do so in 3 seasons, especially if Demidov is still on an ELC.

It was done with Hutson. It was done by previous management with Caufield. Burning a year, means you can re-sign the player long term with only one year played, before the player fully breaks out, giving a certain discount. We'll have more cap space then we need in the next 3 seasons, with 50 mil going out and around 25 mil of league wide increase. Banking on ECLs as rebates will be pointless. Would much rather sign Demi long term earlier.

But to burn a year, doesn't Demidov need to be available before a certain time? Will he be?

Look at my post above. The ELC rebates will be pointless. Especially since Demi will get major bonuses that add up to 4.5 mil for the entire cap hit.

They should definitely burn a year if they can.

Look at Hutson. He would probably cost a few mil more per year if he would get to play his sophomore season before signing. We burned a year for Hutson and it was the right move.

We've had recent examples of why you should not nickel-and-dime your top prospect (e.g., Cutter Gauthier). Fostering good relations with your top prospect outweighs 1 year of cap savings.​

Add the cap increases that could go up to 25 mil in the next 3 seasons, and ELC rebate years are entirely pointless. Signing the rookies earlier will be much more significant for the long term.

It's not nickel and dimming. Is Caufield pissed off? Will Hutson be pissed off signing 8 years this summer? No.

Burning one ELC year means you get a certain rebate for the long term. It's not nickel and dimming.

ELC rebate years will be entirely pointless with all the cap space we'll have.

Furthermore, the player might sign for a bit less, but it also means they spend one more year of their career getting big bucks, which makes it a quid pro quo, not nickel and dimming.

An example of nickel and dining would be if Hughes demanded that Hutson sign a 2-year bridge contract after his ELC paying about 3 million a year.

I am saying that refusing to burn a year is nickel and dimming. In Gauthier's case, the Flyers refused to sign him and burn a year. Next thing you know, he refuses to sign and asks out.

I am all for burning a year for Demidov if he is available and wants to play.

Only 6 minutes 52 seconds of ice time (9 shifts) after 2 periods so far for Demidov today. SKA is tied with Traktor 2-2 in the 2nd intermission.

Oh ok.. how you wrote your post was misleading. Sorry. I thought what you were saying is what i proposed was nickel and dimming. I misread.

Habs will need to still be in the playoffs on June 1st as his KHL contract is valid through May 31st of this year…tons of what ifs….

Even if all the stars align, that’s a pretty big stage to drop a 19yr old in and I’m not sure how that would go over in the room, especially if all hands are still on deck.

Lots of moving parts…heck, we don’t even know if the Habs will make the playoffs, let alone a SC final appearance.

Best to prep mentally on a Demidov ice appearance at rookie camp next NHL season.

The idea is that if he's not signing and they are eliminated, that they'd give us grace and release him early.

Demidov is the type of prospect you introduce if you can. The capital will not hesitate to use Leonard.

We dropped Caufield in when we went to the cup finals.
