thoughts? Please realize its very very possible. Nuts if you ask me. What an absolute disgrace. Both Shanahan and Dubas need to go last year, and get rid of Marner for whatever (cap space), many others but thats a start. Oh how does Manny still have a job here?
Not exactly a realist post. Actually, it is the opposite.

In their current state, they would get swept.

But it's hard for me to believe they aren't going to make improvements from here on. They will get better just on talent alone. The issue is, will those improvements lead to a good showing in the playoffs?

Seems unlikely right now.

They are playing the same as before with less talent and that's a recipe for disaster. It didn't even work against Montreal let alone a true contender.

Anything's possible, but your title says very likely. A little consistency would be nice, for the sake of you know, clarity.

Likely they won’t but very very possible they do? I like those odds.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut eventually.

Given enough chances, 5-6-7, they probably win one sometime. But the core isn’t hard to play against and the team is mediocre due to cap allocation so you are asking a lot for round 2.

I still see this team winning a round, hell maybe even two, but I do not consider them a stanley cup contender and that's the whole reason we believe and I truly don't see it, hell we are not even as good as we were last season.

I can't tell you exactly what we need, but the defensive play of the entire team needs an upgrade and I do think the experiment of such a heavy cap on just forwards instead of allocating it more between D and forwards will not win a cup.

Little scared considering after all these years we've done nothing and after this year there's only two left on Matthews contract and we haven't even sniffed the second round.

Realistically they can beat anyone. Hockey is a game of funny bounces.

Your take I’d say is a bit more pessimistic. Not that I blame you though

How in heck is this realist?

If you punt all those things you've listed TOR will most definitely not win a playoff round . Let alone a make the playoffs.

Not looking at the results of a 3-4-1 record but how they looked on the ice it’s not crazy to say they won’t make the playoffs as of today.

Now of course they can improve as the season goes on but looking at history of the team and the same issues bothering them this early in the season I’m not optimistic.

I’m not a leaf hater I’m a big Leafs fan that has been disappointed with them year after year. I’m having a hard time being optimistic for this team just based on their history.

I argued with some posters at the time, but the harsh reality is Dubas signing Tavares destroyed this organizations chances with this core. Not only did we allocate 11M to another C when we had Matthews/Kadri as the 1/2, we overpaid the shit out of Matthews/Marner as RFAs. In a perfect world we could've had them signed for close to 8-9M each, extend Kadri, use the extra 11M+ on help on defence, maybe pursue a guy like Pietro.

This core can win a round. I don't think they'll ever be able to compete for a cup with the way the money is spread out though.
