It's time to give Brad Treliving his due

For what reason?
He shouldn't have been hired in the first place based on his resume in Calgary.

And added to that the fact that one of the contributing reasons that he got the job here was his familiarity with Tannebaum, who's a family friend. Added to that, the type of hockey he wants isn't my cup of Tea either, as he's creating a pretty slow and offensively inept blueline.

I was skeptical at first due to his resume in Calgary. But I'm definitely willing to see his plan through with Berube after the offseason he had last year.

As far as the so called "offensively inept blueline", they looked far from that in the playoffs. We had goals from OEL, Benoit, Rielly and Tanev. The blueline is the least of my worries.

The man knows how to build a Stanley Cup Champion! After all, he helped build the Florida Panthers.

April 12, 2021 TRADED Sam BENNETT, along with a sixth-round pick in 2022, to the Florida Panthers in exchange for the rights to Emil Heineman and a second-round pick in 2022.

July 22, 2022 TRADED Matthew TKACHUK to the Florida Panthers along with a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2025 in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, Cole Schwindt, Mackenzie Weegar and a lottery-protected first-round pick in 2025.

Congrats Brad!

The trade tree is bigger than you might realize

Meh those guys wouldn't have done anything if they stayed in Calgary. In Bennett's last year, he was literally on a sub 10 goal pace and Tkachuk wanted out.

Great players, but they're in a great system that allows them to thrive.
That's not how it went in Calgary at all.

the trade tree

Bennett and pick Gustav Karlsson from the flames to Panthers for a pick ( David Goyette) and Emil Heineman

2/14/22 Flames trade Emil Heineman, Tyler Pitlick, 1st rounder Filip Mesar (26th overall) and a 5th rounder Yevgeni Volokhin to Montreal for Tyler Toffoli

3/16/22 Flames trade the pick Goyette, a 3rd Aydar Suniev and 7th Jakub Fibigr to the Kraken for Calle Jarnkrok who leaves via UFA

6/27/23 Flames trade Toffoli to the Devils for Yegor Sharangovich and a 3rd rounder Aydar Suniev

Atleast with Tkchuck the Flames have some good players to show for that deal

Bennett was complete garbage in Calgary, he was being roasted for being a top 5 pick

Matthew Tkachuk went to management and told them he wants to be traded and gave his destinations he'd like to go to. Not much you can do in that situation, Calgary just sucked as a unit. If you look at the overall group or players he drafted he made some solid picks, some bad ones too. But some notable guys he drafted.

Dustin Wolf, Matthew Tkachuk, Adam Fox, Rasmus Andersson, Kylington, Mangipane, Sam Bennett

What are you really supposed to do when your star player approaches you and tells you he has no intention of re-signing there, didn't do half bad on the trade. Weegar is a solid D man, Huberdeau overpaid as hell.

Not saying this trade tree was good for the Flames, but they didnt trade Suniev. He played his first NHL game this season for the Flames.

Suniev and Yegor are actually two really good assets, arguably the two best assets in that entire trade tree that isn't Bennett.
The issue isn't what the end of the rainbow looks like, the failure is the fact we moved on from Bennett without giving him an opportunity to shine.

Not sure if you were a hockey fan at the time of the trade but this was the consensus among almost everyone. Tre was in a no-win situation and somehow brought in a guy who had 115 points the season prior, a top 4 dman AND a prospect. It was considered a huge win.

As far as Toronto goes, Leaf fans (myself included) are quite happy with his work so far. Bringing in Tanev and Stolarz were game changers last year. Benoit was taken off the scrap heap in Anaheim and was solid on the back end playing big minutes in playoffs. OEL and Carlo also shored up some big holes. This offseason his attention will need to turn to the forward group and surrounding AM, WN and Knies with depth.

For both Bennett and Tkachuk, we were in situations where Treliving got more than market value by quite a bit. IIRC, Bennett for a 2nd was laughable at the time and Treliving got basically 2x 2nds from Zito. Treliving got basically an extra 1st plus Schwindt from Zito for Tkachuk too.

Treliving is good if he's allowed to slowly build his plan and bide his time, but when it was when he cut corners and dipped into UFA instead of ponying up, that is when things went seriously bad. TBH, Treliving had an idea that was good, but cut corners near the end to try to realize it. Zito took over Treliving's blueprint, paid premiums to realize it and now look at where things are with the Panthers.

I still think he's a very good GM, but the Flames are not in a situation where more damage would have been done here. Conroy spent 2 seasons overhauling things after Treliving left. It's weird. Treliving also left a great structural legacy behind, but roster wise, he left a serious fixer upper for Conroy, but nothing so ridiculous that there was nothing Conroy could do to put his stamp on the team.

Those saying he set the franchise back 10 years are exaggerating. The "no name coaches" situation, look at the ups and downs of the roster. Flames are perhaps 2-3 years away from being in a good spot under Conroy and look at the Flames situation 2 years after Tre. There were some very bad things that were left behind after Treliving, but there's a lot of good he left as well.

We picked Valimaki over Liljegren and that was looking like a fantastic pick as well until he destroyed his knee and a development destroying gamut similar to Bennett. Valimaki was looking like he was trending towards being a top pairing guy.

Rumors were there were potentially two paths with the Tkachuk trade. Treliving had a "rebuild package" on the table and a "compete now" package. Ownership selected compete which is why Zito's package was selected. The immediate extensions was a bit odd though.

Ah! I'm just stirring it and you're right the vast majority at the time thought it was a master stroke by Treliving.

Nope, Treliving traded it for Calle Jarnkrok who scored exactly one goal in a Flames uniform. He selected Topi Ronni in that 2022 2nd round with the Flames own pick who ended up being charged criminally with rape in Finland and who's connection with the team and his rights were terminated shortly after.
at least you got rid of him after the one season

us leafs fans have had to watch the guy be one of, if not the worst non-enforcer in the league come playoffs.

through 30 playoff games....the dude has 4 points and 1 goal which was the 3rd goal in a 7-3 blow out loss. He played PP1 for 2 games + top 6 for a couple last year when nylander was out....he had 0 points

he makes me hate watching hockey

Personally up to this point I have absolutely no issue with the job he's done as Leafs GM , his worst moves have had absolutely no negative impact on the team going forward, those Klingberg, Haakanpaa and Reaves.

One of them is already gone, one of will be gone in 10 days, and the other can have almost his entire contract buried in the AHL, it might even be his entire contract now that the cap is 95 million, I know the amount you can goes up slightly every couple years.

But the defense is set

The goaltending is solid.

He's got a lot of work to do on the forwards though I will say that but there are pieces to work with up front.

Basically what he needs is a 2LW and a 2RW and even then, we have seen Domi play with Matthews, it does work, he can do it.

So REALLY what he needs is a 2LW

that's why I'm surprised he choose not to beat that offer for Marchment because he would have filled that gap.

Overall he has the Leafs on the right track.

Two first round picks at the TDL for Laughton and Carlo.
Woof!
And people wonder why Canadian teams don’t win Cups when they hire GM’s like Treleving, Dubas, Benning, Bergevin, Chiarelli, Holland and Bowman. A whose who of incompetent GM’s.

One of the worst GMs in Flames franchise history. Glad he's f***ing gone!

You’re telling me that the guy who drafted Zary, Andersson, Fox, Wolf, Coronato, Mangiapane and Pospisil, traded Hamilton and Ferland for Lindholm and Hanifin which was an absolute steal, moved Monahan and his anchor contract to sign Kadri who’s currently your best player and got an absolute haul from Florida for Tkachuk when it was clear as day he only wanted to go to FLA (Weegar is your best dman easily and Huberdeau had a pretty good year this year). Gaudreau and Tkachuk leaving had everything to do with the absolute dive of a city Calgary is, and the same goes for Adam Fox. Don’t blame the GM who’s given you pretty much every valuable asset your organization has to date other than Parekh when your team’s piss poor directionless ownership has been avoiding a rebuild like it’s the plague. Conroy has lots of assets to work with thanks to Tre. Govern yourself.

Scouting staff made the picks lol. Let’s not give the guy too much credit.

Under his watch and his team, those picks were made. Tre is an underrated GM and I look forward to watching him improve the Leafs. Not his fault that the CGY organization has been absolutely directionless for over a decade.
What? 😂😂😂😂

Hey whatever you say. If you like him then enjoy what he has to offer. Can’t say Calgary misses him.

Destroyed the Flames and now destroying the Leafs. Yup. He should get a reward. A statute even, outside the other five Canadian clubs. “Here is Brad Treliving” Thank you!

Weegar was always a #1 Dman. Even when he was on the third pairing here, sometimes he'd get "stuck" with Ekblad on the first pair instead of Yandle and, to anyone but our staff, it was obvious he belonged there.
Weegar’s issues with the Panthers was the absolute brain dead plays he’d make. He’d look like an all star then short circuit and make an idiotic play that would cost goals or games. Especially in high pressure situations. Has he got over that in Calgary?

Is Weegar one of those D who looks great and add physicality until watching closely and then his iq comes into question far too often?
