Its looking like the wildcard race in the East is going to be exciting

That's a great short stretch! If they can keep that up for the next 31 games and hope the other teams who are on their heals fizzle out.

I still predict OTT flame out and Rangers pass them. I think BOS make a push and CBJ have a storied ending.

OTT has no offense and if they allow a few stinker goals, they are cooked! The house of cards come tumbling down in flames Hindenburg style.
Yep they’ve held their own without Ullmark for the last 5 weeks, which included a 9 game road trip.
The current 7-2-1 , those 10 games was over 16 days, also tough.

8 wins, 8 losses. 2 are overtime loses. loses = loses.

They are literally two to three loses away from being out of a playoff spot, and leapfrogged by 4 teams salivating. claiming they are "holding" is a weird take. More like they are keeping it warm for, most likely, the NY Rangers.

But if you feel all warm and cozy inside and are sleeping good thinking they are "holding", then good for you. I wouldn't be too comfortable knowing teams below have a game or two in hand and are just a couple points from bumping my team out, especially since OTT have been "spitting and sputtering" since Christmas break.
Talk about spitting and sputtering.

End of the day, even if they get smashed, CLB/DET/MTL/OTT would all benefit from making the playoffs so their kids get to experience playoff hockey at the NHL level.

We’re all roughly in the same boat.

Montreal has been particularly impressive in that I think most people expected them to be further outside at this point in time.

They've had a couple great short stretches now.

Maybe, just maybe they don't score much for the same reason they allow even less.

Monahan is not expected back until mid-March now. Have a look at the Jackets lineup with all of the injuries. It's gutted.

You basically have Marchenko carrying things up front and Werenski carrying things from the back. Then lately the team is winning thanks to very high shooting percentages from kids like Del Bel Belluz, KJ, and Fantilli. They're not carrying play like they were with Monahan though, they're getting caved territorially so there is a much higher chance of regression.

I still hope they go for it and make it, stranger things have happened, but there are too many full rosters competing from basically the same starting point. My bet is on Ottawa, they've learned how to defend and now I expect them to get their offense back at some point, there is just too much talent.

Boston also has no offense and CBJ is riding extremely unsustainable shooting.

Here is a longer stretch for you then, since December 1, Sens 4th in the NHL,

Shouldn't how bad they've been offensively carry as much weight as how good they've been defensively?

If they might allow a few stinker goals and lose, why can't they score a few stinkers and win?

Hoping the Bruins start to play better with Lindholm/McAvoy coming back healthy.
Hampus has been out for a while & (assume) McAvoy was playing injured for a stretch before he shut it down.

Team has serious scoring/special team issues tho so who knows how the rest of their season plays out.

Lol I clicked on this thread thinking the Wild might have finally done something interesting enough to warrant a thread:

I can't root against Monny so I'm hoping Columbus somehow makes it and makes waves for obvious reasons as a Flames fan, but my brain isn't where my heart is.

You keep bringing up Detroit's record since the coaching change which was what, 15 games?

Make up your mind.

You missed the most important part of my post. "Personally I think Rangers and Jackets make it while OTT, MTL and DRWs all miss."

I mentioned DRWs stretch because had they got a new coach sooner, they are very likely sitting comfortably in a playoff spot. I don't expect DRWs to make it since the late coaching change, but they could with OTT and MTL spitting and sputtering to start the year. Nothing is guaranteed and OTT have proven to be notorious mental midgets.

I'm not saying Detroit is good, but I think people overlook they are 10-4-1 since the coaching change and are outshooting their opponents every game (or pretty much every game?).

And they aren't beating bottom feeders, they have bested the champs Panthers, and Hot Capitals, the Jackets, and Jets.

I think people are sleeping on the fact that Detroit put themselves in the race. Personally I think Rangers and Jackets make it while OTT, MTL and DRWs all miss. But one small losing streak could change the scope of the entire race. OTT and MTL have been spitting and sputtering while Rangers have turned it on.

Yes, it's nice to be able to extrapolate from one single stretch of 15 games, while not allowing your competition to do so.

Well, you'd be the expert, seeing as Detroit, famously gave up on their season two years ago after being destroyed in all facets of the game by Ottawa in back to back games, and then last year, losing 7 of 9 down the stretch with a playoff spot in sight.

A lot of recent experience to draw from for your level of expertise in the area.

ummm....I did! I pointed out OTTs last 16 games; 8W-8L.

CBJ is riding extremely unsustainable shooting.

I guess they only need to be unsustainable shooting for like 30 more games. Like I said, I predict they'll have a nice story. They most certainly deserve it!

Fizzle….they’ve climbed in the standing with Ullmark out with injuries. I see a team maturing and learning how to win in this league. The scoring will come, they proved that in the past. I see no reason why they will “fizzle” out with their number 1 goalie option coming back shortly.
I don’t see any validity in your prediction.

with the Devils getting slammed with injuries, I could see them added to the fold of teams potentially in Wildcard spot. if CBJ or NYR go on a run before the 4 nations tournament, I think the Devils could potentially lose their 3rd seed of Metro.

Like I said, it's convenient to ignore the other 34 games that Detroit played this year.

They sucked and everyone wanted Lalonde fired after the first west coast road trip. It was the talk of the entire NHL at the time. Yzerman dropped the ball by not firing him sooner.

Literally nobody is ignoring how flat they were and how bad they sucked. It was thought Yzerman was tanking for James Hagens or a top pick.

Now they have injected 4 rookies... they are playing regular minutes and are competing hard. It's night and day difference from where they were.

You can be dishonest and admit there's no different in this team since a coaching change.. and they have the hardest schedule in the NHL. I see a team in the thick of a rebuild maturing and learning how to win in this league.

We ain't going to guess who makes the WC tonight. I am just watching the NHL and it gives a sense of an outcome. Anything can happen.

Do you think Ullmark returns and he's going to instantly compete at a high level? He seemed inconsistent before his final winning streak prior to the injury. And it took 16 games for him to get to that level.... there's no room for any for error. The EAST is too tight. One hiccup can sink you.

It's just as dishonest to fail to take into account that Ottawa recently had its longest road trip in franchise history and one of the hardest schedules in the NHL for the first half of the season.

Now we'll see how Detroit fares in the second half with the shoe on the other foot.

No idea.

In the absence of Ullmark, Merilainen has stepped in and in his 11 games, he's sporting a .921 and two shutouts.

Now either he's the next Ullmark or the team has tightened up defensively.

Do you think Detroit is going to continue at this pace, or is it the new coach bump? Detroit was very poor before the coaching change.

Yes Detroit have the hardest schedule in the NHL. They seem to be fairing okay. They are besting teams they should lose to, and losing to teams they should win.

Yes a coaching bump is real. But I think we are past that and the entire team has 100% bought in. A team is only as good as their coach. Lalonde has proven that.

Not directed towards you, but nice to see Kasper is proving YzerPlan can draft. Over a PPG since being placed on the top line; 11 points past 10 games. Laldonde buried him on the 4th line.

Crazy stuff...only 6 points separating Boston Ottawa and Toronto. Essentially a bunch of teams will be battling for a playoff spot come April. All it takes is a serious injury(ies) to wipe out a team's chances to playoff birth. How can you not like this competition. It was a matter of time before the Sens Habitants and Wings creep in. A bunch of teams including Jackets Rangers Flyers will be fighting for wild card.

One thing is for sure, the 7 and 8 seeds should be much stronger than last year and are all but guaranteed more than the 1 combined playoff win last year’s WC1&2 managed in the first round.

Good chance those 7 & 8 seeds come in having been in full-blown playoff mode for a month+.

So far today the Bruins, TB, Montreal and NYR have all lost their games in regulation.

Will the NYI hang onto their 3-2 lead over the Avs just to crowd the field?

Looks like they did now it's even more of a cluster.
