What, if anything, can you tell me about Itan Chavira?

Someone was telling me this roller whiz is a legitimate pro hockey prospect. I must confess ignorance.

Currently playing with the Charlottetown Abbies of the MJAHL.

He is a former member of the U.S. gold medal team at the 2007 world inline hockey championship.

"If he can skate on ice like he can off it, he will be a treat to watch", Coach MacGuigan said of his new recruit.

So far he has 7pts in 6 pre-season games.

a buddy of mine plays for the abbies this year and told me about this guy. Pretty sick stuff, I wonder if he'll go far.

He played briefly for the Ohio Jr Blue Jackets last year. Ohio had "issues" last year so I am not sure why he left.
It will be interesting how he does with the new club. I find players have a tough time making the transition from inline/roller to ice. It is usually the ability to step up intensity and defensive assignments.

I might also add that little thing called contact. The whole taking a hit, playing in traffic thing.

i was actually out practicing with him today, the kid is a good skater

I'm not putting the kid down or being ignorant towards inline hockey translation, but forgive me if I remain skeptical about this one until we hear some legitimacies about his game on the ice. I've seen some good inline players turn to total slugs on the ice, but there are exceptions. We'll find out down the road I suppose.

I had seen on the MJAHL website that he had player of the week honors. Although, keep in mind he is 20.

He's 20 years old and playing in the MJAHL. He's actually younger than everyone above him in scoring, as most in the league appear to be undrafted 2006/2007 Draft players (he's a late 1987 born).

Now I don't know what the level of that league is but I'm assuming it's below the CHL (WHL,OHL,QMJHL) and probably also a step below the 2nd-Tier (BCHL,AJHL, etc). If that is the case, Itan has a long way to go even if he does have a very high skill level.

There are other issues though:

-Will stickhandling with a puck on the ice hurt his ability?
-Will skating on the ice hurt his ability?

And if the move to the ice does set him back, how quickly can he adjust?

-How much hitting is there in inline hockey? if there's less, how quickly will he adjust when players get bigger, stronger, and faster the higher he progresses in ice hockey.
-How will he adjust to the defensive assignments and systems of ice hockey?

Either way, he would really need to dedicate himself to learning the game played on ice.

For what it is worth, I think he played in the WSHL junior league with good numbers. The above are all legit concerns. If he does somehow "make it", it will be a good story for hockey in general.

MJAHL is 2nd-tier junior and is the same level as the BCHL and AJHL. I saw him play a couple of times and he played well. His skating looks different/awkward but that is probably because he has mostly played roller hockey. He doesn't look out of place at all and is holding his own at this level. Not sure if he will progress to high levels in ice hockey, but so far he is making the adjustment well.

He's the Pro Beach Hockey Sidney Crosby :sarcasm:

I am going to throw out a few names of players who devoted a great deal of time to playing Inline hockey and are currently good prospects, Bobby Ryan and Pat Maroon. I think people tend to knock the roller game because they've never seen it firsthand and the talent that plays. The fact of the matter is if you're a player it will translate to the ice or roller game.

Itan has insane hands so puck handling won't be a problem nor will his playmaking skills. But his skating could probably use some work since a roller stride is different then an Ice stride and using your edges. Skating will translate over and I think with time on the ice and some instruction Itan's skating will improve and make him a better player.

While there is no hitting in Inline hockey, Itan has had a bullseye on his back at every level he has played at so I am sure he can take the punishment. The d-zone work will come with time and coaching and commitment.

I think people are going to knock on Itan because he's a little bit older at 20 and he's really has never played at a high level of Ice hockey. Last I checked though neither did Dustin Penner and he's playing the show. If Itan can keep it up and someone will give him a chance who knows where he'll end up, a D-1 college or maybe the pros one day. 27 points in 16 games for some kid from California, I would say so far, so good.

He looks like a good player and 27 points is very good. I think he will get a shot a higher level. Does he have NCAA eligiblity still? I wonder if anyone would offer him a scholarship?

MJAHL is 2nd-tier junior but is it at the same level as the BCHL or AJHL in terms of overall talent level of the league?

It's good to hear his skills won't be lost in the move to Ice Hockey.
As for Itan making it to the show, don't get me wrong I'm definatly rooting for him.

It would be a great story for hockey. But beyond that, it might blaze a new path for kids to follow to make it to the NHL, especially for those that grew up playing the game on roller blades in warmer climates.

Not sure how they compare as I have never seen the BCHL or AJHL in great depth, but I was considering them at the same level due to the fact that they are all shooting for the same national championship at the end of the year. Talent-wise the BCHL and the AJHL may very well have more talent than the MJAHL but at the end of the year they are all fighting for the same championship.

He's now leading the league with 38 points in 20 games. 2nd place in the scoring race is 29? points.

He's doing awesome on the ice !

In Jr. A this season, he has 82 points in 51 games

He's already 20 years old though... seems it might be too little too late.
Not saying people don't improve after their draft eligibility is up, but he'd probably have to really be doing some damage in a higher league, at this point.

i imagine he can find a way to work up to say an AHL level if he really is committed to ice hockey. from there who knows..

he really would need to bulk up or magically find a way to get an inch or two taller, though.

I saw him play in Narch last year down in Florida. He is godly on roller blades but I am very skeptical how he would do in higher level ICE leagues that limit his time and space. There's a big diff between even Jr.A and the AHL. Should be interesting to see what happens to him though

At the very least the kid should get some interest on the college Div 1 or 2 level. I'd take it if I were him. He probably won't get a sniff from the canadian juniors or their american counterparts. Good for him though. Seems to be proving everyone wrong every step of the way. Especially those idiots who are so quick to knock a creative player with their chants of "oh yeah, wait till he gets his head knocked off"..
stupid.
you'd rather watch big ol' derian hatcher lumber down the ice than see a kid pull a move that'd inspire countless others? do you even know how many kids have picked up a hockey stick thanks to robbie schremp and rob hisey? Now ask yourself how many have done the same because of your big oxes hatcher, primeau and the like.

good luck kid.. knock em dead
