Isles Prospect Adam Beckman Suspended 10 AHL Games for shoving Referee into the Boards

I have thought of a solution to make the referees more visible on the ice.

1. Forbid teams from wearing orange.

2. Make referees wear orange.

3. Anaheim goes back to wearing eggplant and jade.

4. Everybody is happy, except Flyers fans.

5. The Flyers are compensated with Ryder, Halak and a 2nd.

Players who are color blind might have trouble with that.

punching a linesman in a fight used to get you a 10 minute misconduct, nothing more

Right, and even then the penalty would have been MUCH stiffer if they thought it was intentional. But hitting a linesman will always come with a sizable penalty, even if clearly unintentional.

Likewise, hitting and injuring a ref like this comes with a big penalty. If they thought it was 100% deliberate they’d probably have banned him for life.

The bad news is that his pro hockey career is over.

The good news is he can run for mayor of any city with an AHL team and win with 100% of the vote.

Wild situation. Clearly he didn't mean to do THAT. I think it's a "yeah, we have to suspend you for something". The fact that it appears quite accidental is what gets you 10 instead of 20 or 40 there.

That ref needs to get out of the way though 100%.

the 10 games is because they felt it WAS intentional. Intentionally hitting the ref without intent to injure is a 10 game suspension. If there was intent to injure, it would have been 20 games

Dude is losing a 10 games salary which is $17k+ for this guy. For a guy making $125k, after taxes and agent fees, that's a pretty big cut into his net.

And he doesn't have a contract next year, he's going to have a black mark and it's going to be hard for him to get an AHL contract IMO.

Europe he goes

Seems legit. He "deliberately applied physical force" (the shove) to the ref w/o intent to injure and received the automatic 10 as defined by the rule.

The way it's written, it really doesn't matter if he realized if it was the ref or not; it's holding the person using physical force responsible for it. This is nothing new.

Inadvertent actions are penalized/punished all the time in hockey. 99% of high sticking penalties are inadvertent, the player is still held responsible for his stick. Using physical force against someone is as well; If a player throws a punch in a scrum and inadvertently tags a linesman, they're held responsible for throwing the punch.

Best case, the dude didn't check to see clearly who he was shoving, just assuming it was another player. All those zebra stripes must've created a wonky vertigo that hid the high-vis orange armband. Oops.

The folks saying “rules are the rules” apparently are too simple to understand that these kinds of situations are when rules change and are clarified.

Dude clearly didn’t mean to do what he did. Don’t really care about the suspension. The fine is insane to me. Bigger fine than some of the dirtier hits I’ve seen in the NHL. Absurd man.

Ya, but his gofundme numbers would be insane.

I kid, but it’s also true- capitalism works!

I love how the letter of the law applies to touching the ref, but when it comes to actually enforcing infractions on players the refs let everything go.

You shouldn't be surprised. Every League strictly protects its referees and umpires through ejections, suspensions, and fines.

It was the extended arm shove that got him. That, and the fact that before he got to the circle, when he first looked up his line of sight was directly at the ref, then he looked right and his line of right sight swept over the ref's head while tracking the puck left as he shoved him out of the way, throwing him into the boards. It's not as if the ref appeared out of nowhere (even if he should've been somewhere else). He was directly in front of him the entire time.

If it had been a simple shove-less collision with no chance to see and avoid the ref there would have been no suspension.

If refs let everything go there'd be no PP merchants, so that's demonstrably not true.
