Post-Game Talk: Isles over Devs 5-4 (OT)

Boston was our best game defensively of the season. Still can't decide if tonight was our worse, or Montreal. Montreal was the result of a bunch of stupid turnovers on almost every goal. I'm gonna say tonight's was worse. 5 goals from the fish sticks. Don't gimme this crap about how they been scoring a lot. They're gonna be right back in the toilet soon enough like every year.

They went 4-1-2 in 10/11 before losing 14 straight games. Were 3-1-0 in 11/12 too.

This one looks worse because our goalie was also bad, where as Marty was much better in Montreal. Still defensively both were terrible games. I'd blame the Habs game more on the forwards playing bad two way hockey and getting hemmed in, while I think tonight you can point more to the defenseman being bad (SAL!!!)

Sal was really bad tonight. I'm not sure who I blame for the third goal. Marty came out to challenge too far, but Sal got burned bad.

Honestly I'm just happy Henrique looks normal already.

That and CBGB starting to regain some of that playoff magic they had. Clarkson continuing to put points up. Lots of good things. Get another forward and clean the play up with some discipline and just basic smart hockey and this team can go far.

At least we have a legit first line. Park Henrique on the wing with Trav, and Kovy. His hands are as good as new as we saw tonight.

Sal is playing the system that is being run. He was a little too high on the play but did well considering it was Tavares coming down the ice. Marty can't come out like that if Sal is going to push him towards the glass.

As soon as I saw Marty come out that far I knew that was a goal. As soon as I saw him struggle to get back to the net in OT I knew that was a goal too.

I hate the **** this fanbase gives Marty, and the people who feel he needs to justify every single goal given up. Calling it like I see it this was a clunker of a game for him.

4-1-1 but still

Spin the record any way you want, we're still giving away points to division/conference teams that may come back to bite us assuming we ever start losing regulation games.

Special teams was absolute garbage, and absoultely 100% of the reason for this loss. Three PP goals given up on the one end, an overpassing clinic on our PP (although the first couple looked good, they reverted back to overpassing after that).

It is really just that 3rd line we need to get sorted. Get Yayo some better players to play with. Elias, Zubs and Clarkson have looked good as well (Clarkson has looked good everywhere) and CBGB has been getting better with each game. We roll 4 lines with the talent we have we can do damage. Now whether the third line help comes from a new 2nd line forward and slotting Clarkson down or just putting someone new there we shall see. Still seems like that is where Matteau will have his chance to make an impression still.

Even if Marty didn't **** up I would have bet $200 on the Isles scoring on the PP, if I could stomach financially benefitting from the Devils' ineptitude. Our PK - and the Gionta/Bernier/Carter line on the plus side - both looked in playoff form :p:

And of course they nearly gave up a shorty on top of it when Grabner AGAIN got a breakaway, I swear he gets one every game against us.

I agree we would have lost that game on the OT PP anyway. We couldn't even kill 30 seconds worth in Montreal. An OT PP 4 on 3 is almost a guaranteed win. Except of course when we had the 4 on 3 against Washington, but Kovy ended it so it didn't matter.

On the plus side, anyone that gives Fayne **** only needs to pop in the tape of this wonderful game to show how important he is to us. Not that Larsson was bad (and he's not responsible for the PK anyway) but I don't think special teams was even this bad in the Florida series.

I thought I was going easy!

Marty didn't cost us this game. He wasn't one of our better players, but he didn't cost us the game. I had some hope we could kill off the OT PP this time, but I didn't have huge expectation to be honest.

Yeah this was Florida series style PK tonight. To be fair though the Isles are the only team in 6 games that we've given up 5 on 4 goals to.

the suspense is killing me man.

no but seriously dont say it. chico jinxes us enough.

Tavares has been held off the board pretty well by the Devils!

Our PK needs to be better against the fishermen on Sunday. It's been pretty good this season except against these guys. Still kinda makes me sick to give up 5 goals to them even though we scored 4. We always have a dud against this team. Only it's usually a weird circumstance like getting shutout or held to a goal by countless backup goalies of theirs over the years. Never in a back and forth high scoring game.

this is a bit off topic

but something needs to be done with steve and chico. half the time they mess up calls, like the icing/pp in the 2nd period
steve always allows chico to speak over him. and chico just says things that make no sense. and when the devils are losing he basically talks about how GREAT the other team is instead of explaining why the devils are stinking it up.

You know what really hurts? The PP at the end, and not converting. And then you look at the missed opportunities early in OT. We had a good shift going, and there were a couple shots fanned on, and missed shots.

Steve isn't bad compared to a lot of guys in the league. Listening to him call an entire season is terrible though. He's very repetitive. Never been a fan of guys who emphasize action by just yelling, like Gary Thorne. It's why I love Doc so much. The tone of your voice is so much more important than the volume.

Definitely I think he was definitely missed tonight. Especially on the PK, the guy gives us quality minutes.

It was a frustrating game for sure, but I take it like this. We were bad in areas that shouldn't be a problem going forward. PK was bad, but it overall has been good so I don't think this will be a problem. Marty was bad, but it was his puck handling that was really bad. Again something that isn't going to be a common problem.

I think we do need to get at least 3 out of the 4 points this weekend.

God though we have to get this PP going. Greene needs to be off the 2nd unit. I really like Greene and he does a lot of things right, but the PP is just not one of them.

i was just kidding dude! duds against the islanders are common here in devil land. and it hurts.
we NEED to win in regulation when we play these guys on sunday. hopefully henrique is back in full swing by then, and PD tells kovy to chill when corralling the puck. hes my favorite player but holy **** man...if its on edge, settle it down first!!!!
