Jaroslav Halak

Drew Stafford
Michael Hutchinson
WPG 3rd 2017

Islanders get a natural RW that can comfortably play in the middle-6, or a line with Tavares, plus some cap space. Hutchinson would be immediately waived and either sent to Bridgeport or claimed.

Jets get an upgrade in goal, plus some added toughness on LW. Essentially, Lee can be a younger Andrew Ladd for WPG.

Doesn't meet WPG's needs nearly as much as NYI's in my opinion.

I never said he'd be their starter, but what's wrong with them splitting duties? Halak is a huge upgrade over Hutchinson.

Winnipeg isn't a playoff caliber team right now, Maybe in a few more years so Hellebuyck and Hutchinson are fine right now. No reason for Chevy to trade for Halak if they were definitely a contending team then it would make far more sense but it doesn't right now.

Makes very little sense to the Jets. I can't see them going for the Cup this season and they have no other reason to acquire Halak who they'd lose at the expansion draft.

Havak doesn't offer us anything, he's not very good and has two years at 4.5 million. We just demoted one bad goalie, why do we want another questionable one?

I'd be okay with that, but we don't have the cap space to just take him for a pick or prospect. Grabo would have to be LTIRed.

I'm sure Salary retention could be on the table, depending on the asset. Or a expiring contract, that makes at least some sense for the Jets. Halak is not needed and makes our G situation more confusing.

Halak is quite good. While I agree this trade does nothing for the Jets, let's clear up the fact that the major knock on Halak is being injury prone. Very, very injury prone.

I'm fine with a Stafford trade alone, but leave out Halak.....no interest in him.

We need Hutchinson for the expansion draft.

Well, the Jets could expose Halak, instead.

But, depending on how this season goes, the best case scenario for the Jets might be if Las Vegas takes a goalie. Would they be more likely to take Halak at $4.5m or Hutchinson at $1.15m?

I think it's the latter as one of Bishop or Fleury will be their presumed #1, but it's tough to say.

Wouldn't mind moving Lee for a RW but not sure Stafford is the guy. Winnipeg doesn't seem particularly excited about the deal either.

Haven't looked at other opinions to this proposal yet, but on the surface its very close. Lee is a big problem however, absolutely zero need for him in our lineup.

I realize Lee's $ are important to make this work, but is there an option among your D-men that might work? Alternatively, we could even absorb some of Staffords cap to make it work if necessary?

Edit: Reading through the responses, Halak at 4.5 for 2 more years is a killer. So no way we absorb any part of Stafford's cap & it might have to be something along the lines of Hickey coming back to make this work.

Our only expendable defenseman is Hickey. Has a cap hit of $2.2M and signed through next year.

Indeed a separate offer for Stafford is the way to go. Although he's a really offensive player/goal scorer, with the amount of young scorers we have breaking into our lineup that all deserve top6-top 9 roles (Ehlers, Laine, Connor, Dano, Petan), he's getting in the way.

Stafford (50% retained) for Hickey would more than balance for cap purposes -- would that be at all attractive.

I'd consider it, but probably when Pulock is healthy again which is at least another month. Definitely would need an add from WPG's side, Hickey's a good defenseman.

There's no way the Jets pay to "upgrade" from Hutchinson to Halak then have to expose him in the expansion draft anyways. This just plain doesn't make sense.

We would get much more value just moving Drew Stafford to the highest bidder at the deadline.

I'm not sure how good he is, but I'm guessing he would be behind Leddy, DeHaan & maybe even Pulock for LHD depth. If not, I'd be happy to consider any of those other guys in this proposal.

As for Wpg adding something beyond Stafford at 50% retained, that would seem to be a little one-sided. Stafford is exactly the sort of scorer you need who could fit very nicely onto that top line. Even if he didn't, its a minor gamble & you can turn around and get a 2nd or 3rd for him at the TD.
