Simple deal:

Boychuk (14M owed)

for

Perry (15M owed)

Ducks only save 1M in real money, but trade Perry who apparently isn't in their plans for someone they could use right now to pair with Fowler - I happen to think their styles would complement each other well.

Isles hope Perry comes in with fresh motivation and a chip on his shoulder and brings elements to their lineup they'll appreciate. Trotz may just be the kick in the ass Perry needs to get going again and 40-50 pts is still easily possible for him. They also get out of Boychuk's deal a year sooner.

I'll pass as an Isles fan. Boychuk had a strong season and is the veteran leader of the defense. His contract is not a factor this upcoming season and he is still needed. If the old man can have another good season, it buys another development season for Dobson and Wilde.

If Boychuk is moved, it would likely be next offseason at the earliest.

For starters, I don't think Boychuk has to be protected in the expansion draft. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong.

And I don't like this deal because Johnny is still a very solid RHD, stats be damned. The only real issue here is that he's getting paid like a number 2 Dman, but is actually a vet number 5. I get it, it's not ideal. But he likes living on the Island and is a part of a low cost (overall) D. It will be even lower cost once Leddy is moved and Pulock plays out his current deal. So this year - no issues. I see him being taken by Seattle, which will bring him nearer to his Edmonton roots.
As for Perry, I don't see why playing with the Isles would spark him. Mat? I don't want to pay full freight to find out if that experiment works when i think there are better options out there.

Perry is like Ladd at this point.

Boychuk might be old but I've never complained about his contract yet. Maybe it all changes next year that he has a broken foot suffered in the playoffs but to this point he's been worth his contract. He's a valued leader too.

You are correct, his NMC changed to a NTC clause this season so the next expansion draft the Islanders don't need to protect him, same deal with Ladd

I don't think it's playing with anyone in particular, more the change itself. Perry strikes me as the kind of guy who if moved from Anaheim, will be out to prove he's not washed up. From all accounts, he worked extremely hard to come back last season from his surgery only to arrive with the Ducks in total disarray. Got to think, he's the type of guy who would want to go out on his own terms, playing better than that. Being on a hard-working team like the Isles under Trotz also wouldn't hurt as usually, that effort becomes contagious.

Nah once again the narrative on Perry is overly negative here. Perry has been the far superior player throughout their careers and more specifically during their respective declines in recent years. There's a fair chance of Perry returning to the 40-50 pace he produced on one leg in the two seasons prior to finally have his surgery this year, while Ladd hasn't been that player since joining the Isles - and comes with double the term.

As an Islanders fan I would take Perry of Anaheim's hands if they were willing to trade Getzlaf with him

Seems like Isles' fans all still value Boychuk highly despite his contract, so guess there isn't much more to discuss in this one.

I completely read the trade wrong and couldn't believe people were taking Boychuk... I thought the trade was for Petry. Now the responses make a lot of sense.

Timing matters in this case.

It is probably a very different story next year when Boychuk is more easily movable with only 2 years left and less money payout in his contract.

Don't think you'd be interested by then though.

I don't see how this trade helps the ducks at all. The $14M v. $15M analysis is cash - not cap hit. And if the ducks buy out perry, the cost is $11M (not $15M).

The cap hit in the third year of Boychuck's contract is $6M vs. $2M if the ducks buyout Perry. That is a major downside for the ducks, not to mention the much higher cap hit in 2019-20 (Boychuk vs. Perry buyout). Even if Boychuk remains a useful player on the ice, there are much better UFA options out there for the ducks who will carry a lower salary and cap hit.

For some reason Perry doesn't get a bonus this year but does next year, and had one every year with this deal except Year 1. If they are trying to do a trade, that bonus is the killer part of it.

The issues with Perry don't even make it close to being worth it for the Islanders to trade Boychuk. It's not really about motivation more than the rate he's declining is so vociferous. That was the risk everyone knew about when that contract was done, but I don't think anyone would've expected it be at that pace. If the Ducks don't want to buy him out they're probably better off just keeping him and seeing if he can find it again.
