Friedman: Islanders “testing the market” on Dobson

~38:12 timestamp

Friedman makes it sound like the Islanders are hesitating on making the commitment. “I think they know he’s going to be an eight figure guy.”

He confirmed 1 year until UFA. So, unless they want to potentially trade him as a rental 7 months from now, it’s time for a major decision.

What does andy strickland say lol

think the isles sign Dobson and swallow hard with 9 million a year. They pivot and be patient until Hagens does the ole Adam Fox end around and he winds up on the Island somewhere somehow. Good internet chatter in late June

Jordan Staal was a year from UFA and was traded for Sutter, Dumoulin and pick #8 in 2012. Dobson’s value should be similar.
That was 10+ years ago, also Staal was a #2 overall and had also won a cup. I don't think the situations are similar. Also a note (which I'm sure you know but not everyone does), at the time Dumoulin was very good in college but hadn't played yet played in an NHL game yet, he's obviously carved out a nice career but that was by no means guaranteed at the time. And then you'd need a different avatar pic and the entire universe would be shifted to a new timeline.

Anyway, regardless of the above, 100% agree with how you're thinking of Dobson's value. We're both thinking his value is around what you said.

Re: teams, if the Isles would be open to a soft reset, I think Utah would be all over this. Personally wouldn't trade this year's pick (we need a 2C) but I could see how that would make sense IF we can land someone in free agency. Or depending how injured Barzal is, maybe throw him in too, Utah adds for a true blockbuster. Either way Utah should absolutely be interested on some level I would think

Dobson is a first pair rhd and if Islanders trade him that is going to signal a rebuild and they will want more high end picks especially since Dobson would most likely guarantee another playoff appearance
Ya, we all want the sun, the moon and the stars, but it's about what is fair for both teams. Maybe a 70 point Dobson guarantees a playoff berth, but does a sub 40 point one?

I cant see it being Utah. I think Brady Martin is exactly what they want.

I think Chicago is NYI's best bet

I didn't mean for this year's 4th overall. I meant in general depending on what Isles are looking for. Let's say a top 8 protected pick next year + solid pro (maybe like Olli Maata), and a B or B+ prospect, of which Utah has many. That's a decent package assuming Dobson will sign here long term for something reasonable (considering last season 10+ is a lot, but I could easily live with 8.5-9.5).

Utah badly needs a 2C, personally I think Frondell (assuming he's a center, which I do), Brady Martin would definitely work but I feel 4OA would be way too high for him. Either way we badly need a 2C and this draft has quite a few, we'll be ok.

If the ask from Dobson is 9 per he probably would already been signed long term (unless he made it clear he was not going to stay in NY past next season).

At 9M/year he should have many teams bidding on him and I would hope KH/Mtl would place a competitive bid.

I’m not interested if it’s 10-11M a year like the rumors that are out there

Would be such a good fit in Washington to take over from Carlson but I don't know what package they could put together that would intrigue NYI

It’d be really rough to give up Dobber, but if he is really set on an 8 figure deal as Friedman is saying, that’s…a big risk, for the Isles especially.

He’s a great transition offensive D, who’s far from solid in his own zone, coming off a bad season, and has also shown he can’t QB a PP as effectively as you’d want a 1st pair Off-D. Lost that job and ice time to DeAngelo within games of him getting here. He’s also not ever going to play with a McDavid/Draisaitl here like Bouchard does to help production.

One of the tougher contracts the Isles have had to deal with in quite some time. Makes sense to at least see the market before biting this bullet.

I feel like Chicago would be wise to do a deal around #3 and Dobson. They obviously aren't too keen on this draft since they tried to trade the 2025 pick unprotected last year. And theyve got a Seth Jones sized hole on their RD now, and more cap space than they probably know what to do with. Get Dobson on an 8x10 or 11 now and in a few years when theyre competing that'll be a nice AAV for a top pairing D. Dobson is still pretty young, and he provides some help to a frustrated Bedard.

The Isles do this obviously for Hagens. And then they could trade Barzal in a deal for the Bruins #7 (I had originally proposed a 3 way.. Necas for Barzal for #7)

Chicago invested a Top 2 pick in a RHD last year. Seravalli called Rinzel, another RHD, a “pillar” on his pod this week. Side note: check out how much the Blackhawks played him in his 9 game stint this season.

before dobson blew up offensivley he was seen as a fantastic two way d-man so if the sub 40 point one brings shutdown defense against top matchups than yes but as for value a goal scoring 3c and a prospect albeit very good doesn't get you a number 1 d-man by itself

Detroit needs a LD. We aren't going to pay 16 million for two RD while having nothing on the left side other then Edvinsson.

He actually has played some on the left side. If memory serves, he played a lot of LD on the Memorial Cup teams too.

Never heard anyone refer to him as a shutdown D-man, far from it in fact, that's the problem. And in Ottawa he would not be the #1 cause he would not supplant nor surpass Sanderson in any category

Why not have both?

Maybe there's a forward Chicago likes in this draft that they see as an impact guy behind Bedard, but I think they need to move towards taking the next step towards playoffs. Can always draft more players in 2026

That’s a rough comparison. That trade was very Canes specific. JR loved him some Staal, the move keeps Eric happy and if JR was correct in his analysis about JStaal’s potential that would’ve made the Canes a top team with two huge power forward top six centers. JR was obsessed with the perfect fit of it, JR always gets his man and he never hesitates to overpay to make sure it happens.

Not a fair comparison to a dman not coming off his best season, who’s expecting big money and there’s no situation like the Staal brothers going on.
