Friedman makes it sound like the Islanders are hesitating on making the commitment. “I think they know he’s going to be an eight figure guy.”

He confirmed 1 year until UFA. So, unless they want to potentially trade him as a rental 7 months from now, it’s time for a major decision.

Makes a ton of sense to trade him for a pick to get Hagens, I’m just not sure what team makes sense with that.
For the Islanders but no one else. I just dont see a team with a top 5 pick giving that up for a dman thats about to be a UFA expecting an 8 figure deal after last season..... The Isles are obviously even hesitant to give him that. Late 1st + prospect is what you're looking at if that is actually his asking price to sign.

Potential trading partners that jump out:

Utah - Has the ability to pay, wants to make a splash and has great trade assets (too great for Dobson?)

Carolina - Have the need and the ability to pay him; good, but not great trade assets

Vegas - If Pietrangelo LTIRetires; little to trade, but it’s Vegas

St. Louis - Faulk is getting older and nearing expiration; Armstrong’s always tinkering with his blueline

This is why top 10 picks dont get moved for high caphit players at the draft, when you can get an ekblad for less without giving up anything but cap

Makes sense for the Isles to test the waters. Big righty OFD in his prime but I think his agent is essentially going to wait for the Bouchard deal to happen and tell the Isles “we want that”.

Now…I don’t think he should get that. Not because he’s really that inferior of a talent to Bouchard but because he’s coming off a far worse statistical year and does not have the PPG+ resume over 50+ games the last two seasons. But I think that’s where the contract talks are gonna head, which is the problem.

I thought Dobson was awesome in 23-24 but I didn’t think he was very good last year, outside of just the stats. And as of now, 23-24 appears like a bit of an outlier. I’m not chomping at the bit to sink $10 million+ over 8 years into him based on that. But…25 year-olds that are 6-4 and skilled don’t grow on trees.

Testing the waters is one thing but not committing to a premier defenseman who plays the coveted hard to find premier position is really difficult.

Do you refuse to give Dobson a committment at 9.5-10 a year when lesser RD will get that in the years to come with the cap rising?

Do you run with short-term stopgap RD's for a couple of years when you've publicly stated you're competing for a playoff spot?

Do you give up on a player who's a lock for 10g 30-50 assts every year and get someone's 20th overall and a "B-rated" prospect? (a trade for Dobson would surely go for way more than that).

Tough decision here.

Obviously, if they could get Hagens (Philly, Seattle?) at 6/8 they should do that. My hunch is those teams won’t want to pay him $10M, and give up Hagens for the privilege.

I could definitely see Montreal being involved with one or both of their mid-1sts. Carolina as a Slavin D partner is interesting. Late picks, Morrow and Nadeau as potential returns.

San Jose needs a RD (or any D!) I don’t really want a $10M Dobson as our #1 dman, but we have plenty of assets if he’s available.

My hunch is NYI are looking to use Dobson to get Hagens. If, as I expect, that fails, I don’t think they’ll want to move him for something like Morrow/Musty+late 1st+okay Roster player.

I feel like Chicago would be wise to do a deal around #3 and Dobson. They obviously aren't too keen on this draft since they tried to trade the 2025 pick unprotected last year. And theyve got a Seth Jones sized hole on their RD now, and more cap space than they probably know what to do with. Get Dobson on an 8x10 or 11 now and in a few years when theyre competing that'll be a nice AAV for a top pairing D. Dobson is still pretty young, and he provides some help to a frustrated Bedard.

The Isles do this obviously for Hagens. And then they could trade Barzal in a deal for the Bruins #7 (I had originally proposed a 3 way.. Necas for Barzal for #7)

Jordan Staal was a year from UFA and was traded for Sutter, Dumoulin and pick #8 in 2012. Dobson’s value should be similar.
