Speculation: Isaac Howard & Tampa's Cap Crunch

He can play one more year of college, get paid a bit of money to go back, and then sign with whoever he wants. Thats certainly not all the leverage.
Yeah, would not recommend it - probably not the best idea to sour the relationship before it's barely begun, but Tampa does more have time and space and control still

Tampa has 100% of the leverage.

They hold his rights until August 2026.
Kid's got a big head, and if Tampa doesn't want to give him a contract this year and he refuses an AHL deal, then that's it for his season.
That's what Philly thought with Gauthier ...

Not surprised he’s trying to be a prima donna already. Doesn’t he have a history of these type of antics? Showed up at the draft unironically dressed like Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice and I knew the vibes from the jump lol. That outfit would be funny as a joke, but this kid was 100% serious about it lmao.

Howard’s level of play this season combined with his junior year class status make it entirely reasonable for him to demand Tampa burns 2024-25 on the ELC.

Exactly.

A 1st round pick who played at the level he did in his age 20 season is going to demand a year be burned, because that is the norm. And I disagree at the earlier notion that "TB has all the leverage". If TB says they don't want to burn a year this season, he can wait 16 months and sign wherever he wants (best situation, close to home etc) and he'd only lose a year before his 2nd contract (assuming TB burned a season a year from now).

Once a high-end senior to be prospect reaches the point where he is unsigned before being able to burn a year, almost all the leverage is gone.

I'm still guessing this gets done, because I assume that if TB wasn't ready to burn a year, that they would have moved him to a team that was. I have a hard time believing that BriseBois would expect a 1st round pick who led the nation in points-per-game to sign a deal that starts next season.

And it isn’t that difficult to do. If Tampa is concerned about trying to insert him into the lineup immediately then simply wait until the final couple games of the regular season before loaning Atkinson to make room for the signing.
I get TB thinking about year 27/28, but honestly, by 2027, Vasi is 33, Point is 30, Kuch is 34, Hedman is 36 going on 37.
I'd be more focused on trying to win in the 2 seasons after this. Granted, the cap numbers revealed for that year were projected earlier this season, prior to the Economic unrest in recent weeks. But, still, better to win while you have a chance than worry about something 2.5 years down the line.

His nickname is the Iceman, he pulled of the white suit just fine

12. Finally some clarity on Isaac Howard: he is planning a return to Michigan State. Tampa Bay’s 2022 first-rounder can be an unrestricted free agent if unsigned by Aug. 15, 2026. I admit to being a little bit surprised, as the Lightning were promoting his Hobey Baker candidacy (Howard is a finalist). But word in NCAA circles is the team and Howard weren’t simpatico on where everything stood at this time. We will see how things proceed from here, especially if other teams are interested.

Sounds like the Lightning fumbled/are fumbling this one.

Seems like Howard is not interested in having ELC start next year or going to Syracuse. TB prob worried about putting him straight into the lineup. Also there is the cap issue. Hope he ends up signing, but can't call it a JBB fumble without knowing all the facts.

If you go back to the off-season, Howard had played 2 years in the ncaa after being drafted by TB in rd 1 in 2022. Minn Duluth with 17 points in 35 games. then he transferred to Mich. St and put up a PPG with 36 in 36.

Based on his SO year, if he matched or bettered that, more likely than not he was going to leave Mich St. after his JR season and not return for a SR year.

Around the NHL, teams would be planning on signing him and thus burning an elc year. No impact on his Ufa as he would be due to be a UFA in 2031 regardless of whether he burns an elc year or not. Just a matter of whether those 6 years of team control are 3 elc and 3 rfa or 2 elc and 4 rfa (which he wouldn't be eligible for either Arbitration or an OS if he burns an elc year now).

Teams always have to account for ncaa prospects leaving school to join their nhl club.

As someone else said, I don't think TB anticipated having his season end so early, but I agree

well, for an ncaa frozen 4, they end on April 10 in semis or April 12 for the top team. Teams would likely have 2 games after that which would allow the player to burn an elc year.

The fact that Mich St. ended over a week ago and he's not signed, not sure what TB is still holding onto unless they just can't manage to fit him in under the cap.

Either cap or call up concerns that could impact their divisional race would be my guess. That or disagreement over when ELC will start.

FYSA once you're 20 you burn a year as soon as you sign. No games-played requirement in either the NHL or AHL.

wow putting the pressure on Tampa now. Risk losing me or make a move only a couple games to go.
