Is tonight's lottery phase 1 for entry draft slotting televised?

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. Also, as an aside, I would absolutely love if the lottery was completely changed so that the best team to miss the playoffs was given one ball, the next best given two, and so on down to the worst team having 16.

Then all 136 balls were put into the same machine and one at a time was removed. The first team to run out of balls gets 16th, the next gets 15th, and so on until there is one team that hasn't been eliminated who gets 1OA.

That would make for an exciting lottery day!

Even if our logo is drawn first we'll still have a chance because if Arizona moves up there is a redraw. So our chances are still alive until we see Arizona's logo where it should be, if I'm understanding correctly. Edit: or do they do that draw behind the scenes and we won't see the initial draw if Arizona wins?

@Amazing Kreiderman should be able to confirm

If Arizona wins a draw, there will be a redraw.

However, we won't "see" the draw live. They will do the reveal with the cards. The first card will reveal our fate:

Rangers logo: We did not win and pick 15th
Stars logo: We won the lottery and pick top-2
Flyers logo: Rangers and Stars won the lottery and pick top-2

I'll be tuning in at 7 for the lotterdraftery

or just get rid of the lottery completely and go with the "Golden Rule". A separate ranking with points after elimination. It gives teams incentive to play to win.

Teams eliminated earlier get more games, therefore more chances to generate points, having a better shot to "earn" their top pick

Looking forward to all the “NHL is rigged” takes no matter the outcome.

Of course. Because it's easier to blame everyone than to accept that things don't go your way.

Social media will be filled with salty, braindead hockey fans crying how their team was f***ed over by Bettman

You know....that’s not half bad!

Holy shit didn't know JD went back to Columbus

I would modify this by doing something like:
  • you get a number of ping pong balls base on your standing.
  • you get an additional ping pong ball for every regulation win you earn up to a maximum number
  • The thinking for the max number of additional ball is that a team getting eliminated early doesn't have a games-in-hand advantage, goes 15-0 down the stretch and gets the 1st OA. The lottery still makes that no a lock in. But I'm not sure I like that scenario rewarding that team so much. The wins vs placement do balance out somewhat but the numbers have to be tweaked because sucking has to have its own weight in the final pick. The original rules are meant to make it so that if you truly truly suck, there is an out for you. A chance to get yourself a Sidney Crosby and save your franchise. So I'm thinking that you win a bunch of these gold plan games and your chance to move up the lotto goes from 2% to say 15%.
  • Another system could give teams "draft point" that determines their draft position and the lottery draws like 16 balls and each time your ball is drawn, you can move up a spot. But any team can also catch up on subsequent balls. You could design it so that final standings determine tie breakers. Additionally, moving up a spot might require more than one ball to move up.

the way it works currently each drawing they draw 4 balls and that 4 number combo is assigned to a team, its not individual balls assigned to team. so you can't give teams extra balls for regulation wins without taking them away from other teams. so while i like the idea of rewarding teams that win in regulation, but it would probably be overly complicated for the amount of difference would make.
