Part of the legacy of the 2005 team is the NHL and Olympic careers so many players on that team went on to have.

So despite the 2020 advantage in goal-differential, I think the names on the 2005 team will influence perception.

That being said, I think the quality of opponents the 2005 team faced was higher than the 2020 team.

Canada wrecked a Russian team in the 2005 Finals that had Ovechkin and Malkin on it. Not to mention players like Radulov and Emelin too.

I think some of Canada's other opponents in 2005 (Czech Republic and Slovakia) were also much stronger hockey nations 15 years ago than they are today, and provided a much more difficult test in 2005.

Several other countries did not have a very good team this year talent-wise so I don't know about that. Certainly very impressive but some of their earlier great teams faced much tougher opponents.

Before the tournament I thought they had a shot at Best U20 Team Canada ever, but at this point, and even with a GMG W against the Americans tonight, the title of Best U20 Team Canada ever remains with the '05 team.

No, but it has proven a memorable team. Probably the best skating team Canada. The 2005 team looked better than the opposition in a way that the 2021 team doesn't. I remember hearing Patrick O'Sullivan, credible source I know, talk about how in 2005 he felt that the Americans were relieved not to be playing Canada in the finals. He basically said they'd rather win bronze than get decimated and embarrassed in the final. I don't think that people will talk that way about the 2021 team. Of course, the team could still lose the gold medal tonight and render all of this pointless.

It’s great to watch Canada win but they’ve been so dominant, the games aren’t fun to watch. Canada- USA is always a good game so can’t wait to watch that game!
Safe to say if Canada wins, its up there with the most dominant teams in history.

About half the members of the 2005 team would go on to become star players in the nhl. Is that expected to be duplicated this time around?

One of the better ones for sure but the competition this year has been impacted by covid way more than the canadians so there will always be an asterisk as far as how good this team is considered imo.

After we lose by three to the US tonight, will this still be a legitimate question? Or will we, as Canadians, be asking “what went wrong?”

Honestly, it's pretty unfortunate that this group hasn't been tested at all. Would've been nice to see at least one great round robin game (the divisions were awful this year), or at the very least see Russia show up yesterday. Even as a Canadian I'm glad that the gold medal game should be a nailbiter - would've been kind of shitty having to beat up on a weak Finland team again

Sure

Yes. Somehow it seems like all of these guys will be NHLers. I mean, in the past we've seen guys like Jeremy Colliton play at the WJC for Canada.
