Is There A Spot On This Team For Robertson?

I think most of us were excited about Robertson's post draft potential.

Right up until he turned pro that is. As a second round pick Robertson was a good choice. The let down is that he represented more than just a prospect with upside.

He represented the promise of this management group to find quality NHL players outside the first round.

Now the disappointment in his progress represents a personification of the disappointment in the team's progress. I don't think anyone expected the next DeBrincat. But boy wouldn't it have been nice to see him get Domi numbers.

And to be fair I think Robertson will score nine goals.

But that's about all we can expect. Robertson doesn't fit the mold of what Treliving and Berube look for in their plain vanilla hockey players. And his sweet, sweet, shot isn't good enough to make him an exception to the rule.

The fact he was scratched last game leads me to believe there's no spot for him on this team.

Absolutely there is. Jettison Reaves for the love of God. Play robertson on the 3rd line and Holmberg on the 4th.

“Is there a spot on this team for Robertson.” Well, same can be said for Patches, Holmberg, and McMann. I think they all are worth keeping, but none if them have been consistent. Robertson’s been working his ass off, but if he’s not scoring his small size hurts his game away from the puck imo. If a trade is out there that makes the team better I won’t lose any sleep, and that goes for every player on the team. I’m a fan of the team not any particular player be it 34, 16, 88, or any if the aforementioned role players………

I think Berube has a thing for vanilla players that aren't really exceptional at anything, just hard workers, because Holmberg and Benoit have both been pretty bad yet continue to get games.
Benny’s been fine, some people’s takes make me laugh out loud……..

I agree that some takes are crazy, someone tried to argue that Myers had a good game against Boston, that to me was some peak comedy.

To suggest that Benoit has been unreliable and underperforming doesn't seem that wild in comparison, but I guess we can agree to disagree.

Nick Robertson is an NHL player like the San Jose Sharks are an NHL team. That is there’s probably a role for him to eke out a little niche for himself but your team won’t necessarily be a good one.

I say it every day but the thing I notice is there isn’t a moment where the game looks like it’s easy for him. Every feet he gains looks like a 100 m sprint. Everything is a dogged all out puck pursuit or hounding a guy. Those are admirable traits… but to take advantage of his shot he also needs to just be open and present a passing target, snipe. It’s like the harder he works and more involved he is the farther it puts him away from just being the open sniper who can use his shot cleanly.

Seems Nick and Mitch just need a big Sunuva Of a Beach you might have 3 lines with
Matthews Domi with McMann and/or new acquire and flavor of the Month.
Johnny T, Patch's and the Canadian Sweedlander.

Hyman looked like this... you keep saying it but it doesn't make it true.

He's calmed his game down a lot and has generated a lot more chances recently, he is 23, not 32.

I can admit that maybe I should pay closer attention to him and concentrate on what he's doing...

Seems many think he's a hard worker who isn't exactly a force physically but who consistently puts in effort and tries to be tenacious. As stated in my OP, I tend to think of him as more of a guy who is passive and waits for things to happen/come to him. I tend to find him to not be very noticeable.

He is a guy who can score in bunches. I won't be shocked if he has a four goal week and this thread is bumped.

With his shot he should absolutely be on an nhl team it just probably won't be here. Definitely going to be scratched a lot due to his size like last game. It's too bad was always rooting for the guy.

He could play on a bottom feeder where there's no pressure, get 18 mins a night, get prime PP1, score 25 goals and be a -40.
Just no place to do that on a Leaf team with high aspirations.
As this moment, I think he is another Petan. Guys who looks like they an make the NHL but can be easily replace.

If you can't differentiate between the the utility of a 6'1" 200 plus pound checker from a 5'8" 180 pound player playing a checking game, I can't explain it to you.

I like Robertson but he has to play with a set up guy.

Knies Matthews Domi
Pacioretty Tavares Nylander
Robertson Holmberg Marner
Lorentz Kampf McMann

Come trade deadline, try to acquire a better 3 C

Wasn't comparing their play style but that they are looking busy which you are complaining about.

Robertson has been fine, has generated a lot and the goals will come.

You are seeing something that isn't there, he will find his game, he is 23.

A big solid guy who creates havoc with a high work rate is called a checking forward. That was Hyman's role in his early days.

A guy like Nick Robertson has one sup'ed up ability and that's a big shot. He should ideally be working in some Cole Caufield tendencies to get open to let it rip, but when he chases the puck and puck carrier to the extent that he does it means he's chasing the play and not letting it come to him.

Tell the coach to play him as the shooting option then... small players can forecheck too, Marner is #2 behind Matthews in takeaways over the last 3 years.

It'd be nice if players played a complete game.
