Maybe there is an explanation. But John Tortorella comes in and Vegas has an excellent record, the remaining games of the postseason and then the postseason. He is still Torts, but he seemed to work well with guys like Eichel and Marner and he took the team to two wins away from the Cup. If he was the interim coach, why would this label not be taken off after that success? Or was it pre-planned that it would only be this way? Because in all honesty Vegas seemed to have found a good match.

Vegas wanted Ryan Craig and this was their plan from the start. I don't even think they believed they were going to go on the run they did. They stuck with their plan.

Torts will get another job this year. Teams with coaches on the hot seat will come calling if things start off bad. He's clearly not unphased jumping onboard midway through a year (he's done it twice now).

A team like New Jersey rings as a team that could call for him if they start off slow. Nashville and maybe even Dallas too.

It was likely always the plan to not have him back but I can't imagine Vegas was thrilled with how the final went. Stupid challenge in game 2 and questionable lineup decisions might have cost them a cup ultimately. Plus the lost draft pick for being torts being torts with the media.

I'm only guessing, but my reaction when it was announced he wasn't being kept on was that if he'd had any chance of being offered a contract, his refusal to follow media rules resulting in a lost 2nd round pick and then treatment of the media with the "stupidest question I've heard" comment made him appear to be enough of a loose cannon that McCrimmon didn't want to take a chance on him.

My guess is Torts is semi retired and into doing animal stuff, he decided to help out Vegas and they agreed from the start it wouldn't be long term. Then by the end of the finals Torts wanted to try to win the cup next year with same team but Vegas had already committed to Ryan Craig and Torts had been kind of a dick, and they figured he was a short term bump guy.
