ya hard to compare due to pre-cap nature of being able to replace players. No cap Sekera would have re-signed.

Oh for sure. Teams like the Wings were able to keep their windows open by slinging money and legacy at UFAs (though Murphy was a deadline trade).

For us that might not have been Sekera, but can imagine having AEG money to throw at any UFA possible to patch that hole.

It will be interesting to see how Lucic and Sekera do in Edmonton. A lot of King fans might be upset now at the assets we lost but for the long time King fans here we all know you can throw money at players and flood the top 6 with talent but it takes a lot to build a winner. I remember really wanting Chris Drury and Scott Gomez a few years back and then the Rangers swooped in and threw a ton of money at them. Turned out to be a huge favor to the rest of the NHL. Same can be said about Kovalchuk. Kings were supposedly in on him and his wife wanted to live on the West Coast-cause she's apparently the only person in the world that loves icy winters over Manhattan Beach. Where would the Kings be right now with Kovalchuk?

It's actually kind of scary in retrospect to think of the blessing in disguise of missing on SO MANY UFAs that we took swings at.

Hoping Lucic and Sekera are part of THAT list  Not that I wish ill for either of them.

When you have

Kempe-Kopitar-Toffoli
Pearson-Carter-Gaborik

Brodzinski,Amadio

Muzzin-Doughty
Martinez

And u have Gravel, Clague, Cernak, and other promising role players it's hard to imagine the window being closed due to having elite 1C, elite 1D and elite goalie . But yes losing Voynov hurt us bad. Voynov was one of the best young defenseman in the league and almost a 1B basically. But I think some retooling and change of identity will do wonders for us .

Lets pump the brakes a bit on Voynov here.

A 1B defenseman? Not quite, I think we may be guilty here of viewing Slava as the girlfriend who dumped us and all we remember are the good things.

Slava had a very nice lockout season and was one of, if not the best players for the Kings that spring in the playoffs, but he was very pedestrian in 13-14 when many expected a breakout season. That season he struggled offensively, especially holding the puck in the zone and getting his shot through and there were many adventures in the defensive zone.

Even this year in the KHL he was, by all reports a bit of a disappointment.

Again, not saying it wasn't a loss, a RH d-man with that contract was a loss. But Voynov was not going to be the difference between winning 1 playoff game in 2 seasons and being a cup contender.

Agree with him not being a "1B" at all, but disagree RE: 1 playoff win in two seasons.

They make the playoffs in 2015 with him in the lineup. Hell, I think they make the playoffs if Sekera didn't get injured. I assume they would win a game...they actually would of smoked Vancouver I'm pretty sure without Voynov or Sekera.

I think they would of been a contender in 2015 with Voynov and they definitely wouldn't of been as trash against SJ since Scuderi probably isn't on the ice.

Agree that he wasn't a #1B though. Solid #3, awesome if he is your #4.

Doughty/Muzzin/Voynov/Martinez is pretty nice.

The guy obviously sucks as a human for what he did, but I'm still not going to be the "**** you, Voynov!" guy because I don't have two Championship Blu-Rays without him. Hate that he helped torpedo a possible dynasty, but the guy allowed the Carter trade to occur and was awesome in 2012 and '13. Blocked the potential Nash GWG in overtime of Game 5 in '14 as well.

^^^^ this was Voynov's biggest contribution to the team. He is an awesome / safe Dman, but we really didn't know that until he got more ice time after JMFJ was dealt.

This team is still reeling without a (nother) Dman of his caliber, Doughty (and by extension, Quick) has to try to do too much to take up the slack.
