I think to say that a rebuild is almost done, the team has to at least make the post-season and be a realistic team to push to the top 6 in the conference the next year. This team might make the playoffs next year. Might. It looked like it would a few weeks ago, but clearly the staff needs more experience, the roster more depth and the players better resilience.
Dach, Newhook, Laine underachieving has pushed rebuild back. Need a good draft and solid off season to catch up.

If both Reinbacher and Guhle cannot return to their full form after their significant injuries, this team’s heralded re-build will take at least two years longer. All the discussions about possible combinations and usages of our current defensive assets is akin to re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

With the injuries to Guhle and Reinbacher, the trading of Harris and Barron, the obvious limitations of Mailloux, the over usage of Matheson, the decline of Savard and opposing teams’ growing ability to limit Hutson’s mobility and effectiveness through strong targeted physical play Montreal has been caught slow on defence.

All the Demidovs, Hages, Becks, Kapanens, etc. won’t address this problem. As I said at the start of the season, the team’s supposed depth on defense was largely illusory.

Reality is sometimes a real bitch.

Try being a New York Football Giants fan.
The depth on D was similar to Bergevin’s approach: we try all these guys and one of them will surprise and grab a job. The team is sufficiently weak that it’s pretty hard for guys to work out. On the other hand the complete lack of defensive D made Carrier really stand out. Similarly I was surprised Kovacevic was discarded because he was the only guy playing defense for a bunch of games last year.

I like Dobes but he’s far from a sure thing NHLer at this point. He has a lot of holes in his game he’ll have to fix if he wants to stay. He’s also going to be 24 at the start of next year so he’s going to be exiting the young stage of his career. Fowler’s the guy we really need to work out but it wouldn’t be smart of us to be banking heavily on one guy being the future. We need a bunch of young goalies to be competing with eachother or we need to make a trade for a goalie that has somewhat established he is an NHL goalie.
Dobes just has to put the work in to correct the weaknesses which are getting exposed as our D game falls apart. I like his attitude and his physical attributes he will be really good if he improves at the same rate Montembault did when he first arrived on the scene. I'm not concerned about him being NHL material.

Neither are sureshots.

Solid goaltending is the most difficult and elusive piece to acquire.
So how does needing a 3rd piece make sense? With that logic No matter who we acquire you gonna say the same thing 😆 😂

We have 2 pieces and we roll with them until they prove otherwise

Yup, a 5th rounder with a .904sv% and another that never played a game in the NHL definitely solves the goaltending situation.
😆 🤣

Called prospects

Are you gonna say the same for every goalie prospect we draft?
Are you saying the same for demidov?

I'm sure you said the same for Hutson.

It's called prospects and we're a rebuilding team.

Lmao this post

I don’t call any prospect a sure shot. I learned from experience with lots of « savior » type prospect that amounted to nothing. These guys have potential, doesn’t mean we are set at the goaltending position is all I’m saying.

It's a rebuild thread. Of course no one is a sure thing. But in terms of the REBUILD, just like we got our franchise player in Demidov (obviously not a sure thing), we got our future starter (obviously not a sure thing). As a result, we don't necessarily need to draft a goalie to fill that need.

Is all I'm saying

The intensive acquisition phase is over as per HuGo. The building phase is underway.
This is the phase that will get some heated discussions happening as AAV Term Window Core and Role take center stage. We are seeing it already. I think Balance is still the key as the Carrier acquisition seems to prove.
I said it a while back Hughes isn't going to be able to keep everyone happy but if we keep winning does it matter?

This is the way I look at it as well, and I wasn't aware that hugo mentioned this.

They have drafted assets and now it's the part of the build where you have to unscramble all those peices and start to connect them together.

Who stays, who goes? Who do you get externally to help glue the peices together?

It's certainly not over but I anticipate a shift coming in priorities.

I'm wondering, with Montreal's 2025 own 1st rounder, whether we package our other 1st round pick to move up or not, do we pick a C, or a RHD like Mrtka?

Which position do we try to shore up, knowing it will take at least two to three years before either player joins our ranks at the NHL level?

I would 100% trade out 2 firsts and add if needed to get Misa

Unfortunately, that won't get us Misa, I don't think.

But, yes, I"d also give up both for Misa.

The list is long that I would give for Misa.

Would you add Hage to the two first round picks for Misa?
