Follow up question, why would anyone want it to be more popular? All that means is more money to the players and owners, and higher ticket prices. Does it benefit the average fan?

Bettman went on First Take to talk about McDavid today. They have a documentary on him coming up later this year.

They’re trying a few things but it’s hard to promote him unorganically. If he wins tonight there will be a huge spotlight on him moving forward.

Hard to market someone with zero personality. He’s just going to give boring cliche answers even if you gave him all the interviews in the world.

This too.

Everyone who watches hockey knows about McDavid but he isn't getting the attention like ovi or Crosby due to the fact he doesn't really have a major rivalry it's also the reason other guys to get more hype because of how amazing McDavid is it is seen as impressive when anybody gets close or wins the scoring race because everybody know McDavid is the best so there is more to discuss with other players

It validates their choice of hobby.

Would be nice to be able to talk hockey with people IRL, maybe I'm a social outcast but I don't know anyone IRL really beside 1 or 2 persons with whom I can have a convo about hockey. No one seems to follow the NHL.

lol not here in Canada. Rogers coverage of the first 3 rounds were quite anti oilers.
French-Canadian coverage is all McDavid this McDavid that, next Lemieux if he wins the cups, etc.

There was a clear bias against the Oilers in the first 3 rounds. Especially in round two. In round two every bit was about the Canucks, every locker room camera was in the Canucks room, the series even opened with a 20 minute special interview with Silovs! Oilers got none of those special moments during the first 3 rounds.

Modern stars, including McDavid, are not like the guys in the 80/90s. The players now don't have the same amount of personality. Part of that's society, and part of that is how committed players have to be to reach the highest level. You aren't going to see a Guy Lafleur type smoking between periods and showing up hung over. Everyone is going to be as professional as possible and say polite things to the media.

Ovechkin:
Videos show him messing up the first pitch before later doing a keg stand out of the Stanley Cup and leading a chant of his own name.

Subban, Marchand, Ovechkin, Malkin, Kessel in his own way

McDavid even among the modern stars is a bit of the more boring side personally wise.
