The average fan is absolutely dumber. He/she probably reads Facebook posts, about flat earth, at a 6th grade level.
Is the average fan now smarter or dumber than 10-15 years ago?

Not wrong, there seems to be a large contingent of people that are out looking for the next "hot taek" or whatever you want to call it. It's not just on here either, it's everywhere. Actual analysis and long-form type discussion is largely ignored as antiquated. Anymore it's all about going viral as fast as possible. I blame twitter personally, as that site rose in popularity lengthy discourse and analysis dropped off, and I wouldn't be surprised if the correlation was causation on this one.

Based on what I see on HF, smarter for the most part. Based on what I see on social media, dumber for sure. So much herd mentality, click baiting, and edgelording on social media in relation to hockey.

The average fan doesn't browse Hfboards. If going based off normal social media, then I have certainly seen a lot of stupidity.

People in general seem to be losing their critical thinking skills, which you know, not great. Most seem to want to align with some bullshit ideology so they feel like they belong to something without informing themselves well enough to put together their own opinion.
As far as the subsection of sports fans though? Let's be real this was never a population sample marked for their intelligence. Probably about the same.

Personally, I think as a whole sports fans are getting smarter. There’s a lot more access to in-depth analysis online than there was 10 years ago. Talking video breakdowns and whatnot. I eat that stuff up.
Unfortunately we don’t hear much from those folks. I also know most aren’t going that far. But the average fan is probably just as clueless as ever.

A select group of fans have always been a dumb species
Hypocrites, conspiracy nuts who think the NHL is rigged, claim officials are against them.

I'll bite.
Encourage learning. Limit your information intake from all forms of social media. Do your own independent research, looking at multiple sources, when forming opinions and informing others. Ask yourself "is this objective, or is it subjective?" when trying to separate fact from fiction. Don't be afraid to say "I don't know" or to ask others to explain something a second time when you need it.
And most of all, keep fit and have fun.
