In hindsight, Jim "Jet Black" Benning letting him walk from the Canucks was a massive misfire. But at the time, I legitimately thought his career was pretty much done. There were some really really rough years there with injuries.

I think coming to Calgary helped him, our off-ice staff is arguably the best in the NHL and the #1 reason the Flames are consistently in the bottom 10 (or top 10 in fewest) in man games lost to injury.

Losing Tanev, Markstrom and Toffoli all at once for nothing. That was a masterclass.

Great pickup for TO though, exactly the type of player they needed. Similar to Edm getting Ekholm.
